The most popular 4x4 in some snowy country (can't remember where) and used by their postal and emergency service iirc. Very basic transmission and it used to be a manual selection puch unit I think.

Yes it is most likely the back up battery, relatively cheap to have it replaced and would also negate the risk of damage to the main panel through trying to charge a defective battery.
Lad at work had to send one to the DVLA for a replacement V5 last week, they only accept po's and cheques.
