I'd bet the house its a Veritas! 'Sparky special' very very basic alarm that uses the same plastics case for the main box and keypad Still very well made to be fair but nowhere near as flexible as the Premier range.

I wouldn't rule out Texe just because you feel your house is 'too small' - its still a great system, and well manufactured. With 9 devices or so. the mesh should have plenty to work with! Plus, the Texe 12W has 4 on board wired zones which might be useful. The HKC and Siemens are good too, although you might have to look around a bit to find a Siemens installer! I always bring demo kit to customers myself, I know some think its a bit old-school but from a customer point of view that's exactly what I'd want - to see what I'm getting not just a scruffy piece of paper with a single figure on it. And as everyone said, don't just go with the cheapest - use the company that you feel the most happy with, and do invite some SSAIB companies to quote for comparison. Also be aware some advice is for your benefit, not just to make more money for the company! For example, the number of times I've been told "we want to save a bit of money, so don't think we need those detectors upstairs" is a good example. It's only when I explain without them, a burglar could, for example, be straight through the door, up the stairs, and not have to worry about an alarm, let alone a confirmed alarm, for a good 20 seconds it hits home. Good luck!

Well, I did this job today swapping out for an LCD based panel. The two detectors in the initial picture... Wait for it, wired in PARALLEL?!!??!! Or as the job sheet which I found (but sadly haven't got) stuffed on top of the cabinet said 'wire garage in parell' Twisted wires to connect speaker in trunking - no insulation Taped up twisted wire joints in loft Somehow ran out of wires for SAB so joined Strobe to Siren!! (Lets not forget even old panel was PD 2010) Front door contact was Grade 1 without tamper. All from an NSI gold sold as Grade 2X. (Not a cash job or homer). Class and a half.

At the end of the day its a new set of directors I suppose - wouldn't they (SSAIB) be on dodgy ground legally? Same staff on tools, same office, and same phone number, and a strangely familiar logo though.... (the logo on the bells is nothing like anything on the website. The S is about 200pts and rotated so it could almost be a 2....)

In the last dying gasps of this Ex-WSM Gold (hmmm... who could that be??) they did this bells only as a G2X. Full paperwork not a homer or cash job etc... To be honest I'm now (possibly) changing the panel just over a year later so haven't thoroughly investigated this little setup; as its going to be changed for a DT and, hey, might just put a contact on at least one of the 2 external doors to the area. It's either wired as a 2 zones to get a confirm, or wouldn't be at all surprised if wired in series to cut down on FAs.... Remember the same brains behind it are still trading..... If we get the job I'll let you know how it was wired.

OCS round here, honest, they even kept the stickers and reports the same on the ones I took over, changed only the logo... Again, unless this was only the domestics... But can't see OCS only wanting that kind of work? -

Well, good thing is it doesn't seem to be wanting an engineer code then. Or seems worried about lack of mains. So maybe not worth bothering with? Sorry I can't help any more. -

Definately same logo as on that panel. Yellow wedge box with green lens? -

They had a big office in Bristol too, went past it every day on the way to college. Believe they bought out City then went TU and got gobbled up by OCS? Amazing how many City boxes you'll still see in Bristol though. Stainless so they'll be around for a few years to come. I've replaced a few. All were old bells only 9448s, the classic 3 zone version. I'm guessing someone came along and bought out OCS as all their boxes look really shonky? -

Never knew ASG went as far as Dublin... Sorry can't help. Definately looks like 'QED' from the case logo though. -
There was a special Rapesco gun for 1.0-1.5 T+E mind. Used plastic staples. Gave NICEIC inspectors palpitations when seen!! Lets have some more of those jokes, folks...

Things found in airing cupboards

We did an alarm in a shop that had been a jewellers in the 1970s and then an estate agents ever since. Unbelievably, the stairs to the 2nd and 3rd floors were lightly boarded up and had never been visited in years! Sadly nothing of value but a nearly fully kitted 1960s workshop complete with Bakelite Lucas batteries to run some sort of electric brazing iron and a retro stock room with period packaging etc... Sadly before the days of camera phones. -

Found a coin (US dime) unde the floor which the householder was happy for me to keep. Later sold it for $400 on ebay US (rare mark) Same street years later (last year in fact) found a large grotty envelope underfloor marked '2004 - £15,000 cash'... Have you seen my new motorbike? Not really, obviously I gave it to the customer - who then confessed he'd forgotten it was there!! -
Agreed - they are of great use, like the Ladybird version of the regs but in a good way
-
Maybe, but its a bit like a 'No 4x4s' sign on a byway. The thoughtless actions of some people that usually cause such signs to go up in the first place, tend not to take much heed of an unpoliced 12" square of aluminium with some writing on. What I'm saying is that the real cowboys wouldn't waste their money on such a book anyway, so ultimately I think it wouldn't stop or encourage them one way or another.

You forgot 'pressurise vulnerable old person into signing 20 year contract'...

Ifsec Moves To London

Spent a great week in Glasgow doing 'backup' for the techs in my MOD days - they didn't feck up once (for once) so we didn't get a single call, talk about a paid holiday! Anyways, having looked at the train prices and deciding I would have to install to a small factory to make that money back (or a palace at Arfs rates) I'm going to go to ifsec on the 16th by car I think, even if so I can just have a proper chat with the SSAIB people - and claim my free ipad from webway obv. Perhaps see you there - I'll be the one chucking whippet by-products at the CCTV spammer stands.
