  1. Apologies if it sounded harsh and I should have added I've never touched a Castle alarm since approx 2003, when it was proper old school stuff with telephone keypad RKPs, so can't actually help... What checks have you done to make sure the expander is being recognised and has the correct voltage, wiring tests etc...? Forget the actual detectors for now - I would wire a resistor of the correct EOL value into an expander zone and take it from there. This could be no more than a programming issue as H says of course...
  2. If I came onto a gas fitters forum and said I once plumbed in an outside tap, and work in IT, so thought installing a boiler would be a piece of p155 what would your likely reaction be?
  3. Isn't that because for contacts you only need front tamper (or, gross case damage in the case of a metal RSD contact) and magnetic interference detection in lieu of a back tamper?
  4. There is one man... if he can't help, no one can... Seriously though, I wouldn't expect them to do it for free 9 years or not as at the end of the day you want it moved for your own benefit, it's no real fault of ADTs? Also I wouldn't assume you'll get a 'free upgrade' if it breaks, they must have warehouses full of 'new old' repair stock or even more sensibly they get the manufacturer to do it for them many years after they stopped selling it. It'll likely be a multi provider SIM so I wouldn't be too concerned about that.
  5. Yep nice black external grade cable never stopped me yet. Unless you are 5 storeys up of course... You could that route is not suitable for alarm use. But then most of BT's bits are just as easy to rip out / off?
  6. Or Share? OK, I misremembered where Arf was from...!
  7. Fair play - this has to be a first though! Shame Arf isn't around. [An installer in your area AFAIK who used to frequent these boards]
  8. And if you really wanted, they would (should) change the engineer code at that visit to '1234' or similar as part of or as a small addition to the service price. However, they would probably then want nothing further to do with the system, so you would then be on your own. If you don't know what you're doing (and this goes further than 'reading the manual') it might not be such a good idea.
  9. Eh? Is that what that means? No I always wire to the ceiling from above. Not like the rough c--ts round here that use ceiling brackets 12" out to avoid the hastle. I only ever glue for short runs i.e 12" along a dado so a keypad isnt jammed in the corner.
  10. Why? Customers love it. One coat of paint and the wire is virtually hidden.
  11. Sorry that my lighthearted comment was taken the wrong way. But... I'll say it again, the whole point of it being lockable is so that another 'gardtec guru' can't just pitch up and unlock it, otherwise, what would be the point? Yes just apply via your local patronising mod...
  12. Its locked for a reason, well, as in, the reason being to stop it being easily unlocked! Unfortunately there are no easy ways to unlock, and even if there were we can't give them out on the public forum, sorry.
  13. But bulbs aren't usually on when the property is empty for a week...And thats a common cause, bulb blows, householder replaces, circuit back on. Whereas power circuit trips, cause unknown, owner shrugs shoulders, repair time variable. Thats fine, still often reset / resettable quicker than a power circuit trup. And fixed circuits mean few changes, more stability. No car boot battery chargers being added to circuit and causing random trips.
  14. Thought for a minute you'd thought I wasn't using a spur...! Re-read it now and get you. Exactly, it's a circuit like any other that happens to be mostly used for lights. What next, no TV amp in the loft?
  15. WTF? If it can't be dedicated, I always put the panel on the lighting circuit, even if it means extra work. Lights either don't have RCD protection, or get fixed quickly. Sockets can trip and get left off for hours or even days. Slightly less relevant now with all RCD boards I grant you. The average panel takes less current than an standard 100W lightbulb.
  16. Ah right, don't use HKC, pleased they do a proper tester though.
  17. It's not (just) the stamp duty, there are massive tax changes... https://www.unbiased.co.uk/news/three-ways-to-cope-with-losing-buy-to-let-tax-relief/3963 Of course if it's a large (>15 I think) or mortgage free holding, that won't matter.
  18. Hi Rob, Welcome to the forums. Is your Dad aware of the forthcoming tax changes regarding Buy to let? http://www.theweek.co.uk/66688/buy-to-let-after-the-autumn-statement-what-the-changes-mean-for-you Many people I've spoken to are either not aware full stop, or don't see the full implications.
  19. I would only use Rapid myself, although am currently utterly lost for a UK address to make a warranty claim - Rapid UK office was closed a few years ago, there is literally no UK address listed any more. I also still use glue and caulk all the time to be honest on domestics etc...
