  5. I think you are right and the focus should be back on the topic, unfortunately I have to remain rather cautious as the subject is a competitive service. CGs work is very good and has been endorsed not only by me but Texecom in a separate thread. This is an extremely important topic and one that we (WebWayOne) take incredibly seriously, indeed we have argued at the standards committees that all communications should be at the highest level, no matter what the risk. It makes absolutely no sense to say "well its only low risk so we don't need to bother about security, its never happened before and probably never will". That is insane. Because as Dick says, it may not be a security product that is hacked, it may be something simple to disrupt companies or peoples lives. We advocate (and deploy) AES encryption techniques at every level, it should be a standard requirement. Period. The implications of a security breach or published weakness cannot be underestimated and if you cannot update your software remotely then the impact on the end user, installer etc are immense. Just look at the security updates you get for your PC, MAC or firewalls as an example. Imagine if Microsoft could not remotely update their software, there would be queues for miles outside PC world etc for updates. Hence we have always deployed flash upgradeable equipment.
  6. Our Christmas Competition is coming your way this December. Don't miss out on your chance to win some Christmas goodies!

  7. I think that's too much of a sweeping statement. If your line of expertise is not important then your view may be taken as much the same, without some form of clarification to the guys who post on this forum would you not think?
  8. Any time you begin to communicate and you have sensitive data to transmit there is a requirement for encryption. It does not matter whether its the written word, the wireless radio (the Enigma machines from WW2), encrypted telephone links between governments or your bank transactions, and yes, Alarm Transmission. You may "well they broke the Enigma code" but you have to remember the hours, weeks, years that went into that and part of the key to cracking this was the fact that the Germans were transmitting a set pattern of data with every transmission (the weather reports). In basic terms, they gave away the key to their encryption through predictable messaging. What is equally if not more important, was keeping the fact that the code was broken from them, so that they could be fed miss-information. So no, PSTN, (or back to Pigeons if you like!), is not the answer. Getting the encryption technique right is, and its a basic requirement. If communications security is compromised, then everything that is current or went before is at risk until a new form of encryption is deployed, and in modern communications that means a software update.
  9. In the context of this thread, yes, pretty irrelevant. But if you didn't know there was an issue with your security, then yes, it would be useful but a pretty painful experience and the repercussions would be acute.
  10. Heading to Sydney...

  11. That's irrelevant. The whole point of data security (or Security for that matter) is not simply what has occurred in the past, it's what can happen today or in the future. It's like insurance - if you didn't have it and you had an accident you'd soon get some... If you want to risk not having any and just hope it never happens...that's your lookout. We do happen to be in the Security Industry, don't we?
  12. Difficult topic for me to be involved in tbh. The levels of testing that can be done in respect of substitution and encryption are complex and I do believe that when we carried out certification to EN50136 this aspect was largely self declaration. Not ideal I would agree. As a company our core specialty is (and always has been) secure communications. Ever since we entered the market with the first IP based ATS back in 2005 we have been under the microscope from all aspects of the industry. So 128AES, key exchange, substitution protection etc etc are what we eat sleep and breathe. In a separate topic I mentioned that we have had the ATS independently pen tested on multiple occasions, we would not have been successful in internet signalling within the financial sector & corporate space without. This level of testing was (as it should be) intense and incredibly thorough, carried out under NDA as well because we were almost at the level where we were talking about the core of the encryption and substitution techniques we developed.

  23. Just for continuity (as I have confirmed this on a separate thread). Andrew does indeed have a couple of our units (I was not aware until today) and he has carried out some basic testing and evaluation. As far as I'm aware, all ok but I'm sure I will hear otherwise if this is not the case!
