dommer Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Hi. I have an old Optima XM6 panel which was already installed when I moved in. After a little work it is now working fine. I am considering getting a pro round to give quote for a better system with possibly monitoring. Given the fact that I already have the power supply, hole in the wall and cabling neatly hidden for the PIR's, can I expect a cheaper quote ? If I want to keep the position of existing PIR's and door contacts, surely even if the PIR's had to be changed, a new system would be able to use existing cabeling and therefore reduce labour costs ? Or am I wrong ? , Dom.
PJF Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 The original cables may be fine, but is the location of the PIRs. On many DIY jobs the PIRs all tend to be fitted in the middle of the house looking out. One bonus will be that the external bell is already cabled, hopefully in 6 core and not 4. What power supply, if you mean the panel then that will come out for sure on a monitored system. Top tip: if you ever catch fire, try to avoid seeing yourself in the mirror, because i bet thats what REALLY throws you into a panic and dont forget the one thing you cant recycle is wasted time.

The new company may come across problems, may find unacceptable joins or several devices on a zone etc (requiring new cable). Even if all is OK they will need to check all the cables and verify where they are which will take time. . Sometimes there are no problems, but from experience nothing goes smoothly. They might charge you a day instead of two and then be there for 3 because of unforeseen problems. Your PIR's will almost definitely need to be changed as they are very unlikley to comply with new legislation.
