Alarm With Relay To Trigger External Floodlight

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions or recomendations from experience. I am planning to use a relay to switch on an external light (floodlight) when the alarm is activated.

The main issue is that the switch for the floodlight is about 30m away from the alarm panel. Naturally, I can run a cable (etc..) but its just not practical.

Another option I have considered (any not yet rulled out!) would be to use an X10 relay inside the switch.

Just wondered how you pro's would go about doing this when installing a system. Would you run a cable to the switch and use a relay? Is there any other tricks or suggestions?

Thanks,

Jab

Unless of course that your enquiry is in fact retrospective and you have carried out the work pre-stupid regs. date!

Minor alteraton to a circuit in the house, no worries. (As long as the switch isn't in the kitchen). ;)

This is how I have done it on my system:

Alarm trigger fed from output on expander into loft, then through a 20mm stuffing gland on an adaptable box. Wire these cables to the coil of a DIN rail mounted 5A relay (don't forget to fit a diode across the coil to prevent back EMF damaging the panel. A IN4001 type should be fine). Mains is in 1.5mm T+E (You should use suitably rated cable. The feed for the light should have been fused down to 3A somewhere before the switch), and is connected across the N/O and Common poles of the relay. Mains goes out of another 20mm stuffing gland, down the cavity wall into the switch. It's wired in parallel across the switch terminals. Works fine. If you are'nt sure, just wire the alarm side up and get a spark in to do the mains side of things. It could disastorously wrong if you get anything mixed up when you wire the realy up!

Im in Ireland. Am guessing that this relates to a new UK code of practice for alarms / general wiring?

Am curious, tell me more!

Part P relates to the building regulations, some newly introduced rules regulating who is permitted to carry out some electrical work within dwelling houses, and which work is notifiable to the local building authorities. The link should take you to the Government's site where you can download a copy - a little light bedtime reading :-) http://www.odpm.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1164183

Part p document. Basically, going against this is punishable by death according to the NICEIC.
