tom25 Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Hi, Could i fit a UK 3 pin plug to the power cable from the control pannel instead of using a spur and use the plug socket as the main source of power? Thanks
ian.cant Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Hi, Could i fit a UK 3 pin plug to the power cable from the control pannel instead of using a spur and use the plug socket as the main source of power? Thanks Of course you could, but its not a good idea. Its too easy to switch off or knock the plug out accidently which would result in the battery running flat. And true to Murphy's law, it will happen at the worst possible time!
tom25 Posted April 27, 2006 Author Posted April 27, 2006 Because we have plug sockets in the loft where we aim to put the pannel, is this way a ok idea electrical wise and alarm wise if i just run a cable from the pannel to a plug to the socket? We are looking at a Securitech 800l alarm pannel, Is what i want to do ok with this pannel? Thankyou
bellman Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Why not just have a spur fitted thats fed off those sockets and connect the alarm to that instead? plug and socket, no, no, no, no, no thats not the safe or right way. Service Engineer and all round nice bloke ) The views above are mine and NOT those of my employer.
ian.cant Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 The whole purpose of using a spur is that it cannot be accidentally isolated from the mains supply. The best advice is still "Its not a good idea" but theres no other reason why you cannot connect via a three pin plug.
tom25 Posted April 27, 2006 Author Posted April 27, 2006 OK will try using spur, Thanks for your advice everyone
morph Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Remember that your work will need to comply with the "Electricity at work regulations and BS7671 and the Part P of the building regulations" In effect if your work doesn't comply with these regulations and you have a serious fault or even a fire, your insurance company will not pay out. By all means fit your own alarm, but I would strongly reccomend that you get an approved Electrician to install the electrics for your system, as a diyer you are very unlikely to be able to comply with the above legislation.
