  1. 1. Should we relax our views on the information we give out on publically purchasable alarm control panels.

We only use documents holders during takeovers if they've been installed by //.National Installer.// - cheers guys!!

Roger - getting hold of docs through the office when you work for a national is not the easiest of tasks when HO is up north somewhere and I work from home!!

I know that it isn't the best place for them but it'll do for now..

Best place for paperwork is inside the panel! How many people have actually known a a panel to catch fire becuase of paperwork inside it??

Seen the aftermath three times in last 5 years, most recently 6 weeks ago battery failed and due to the panel trying too hard to charge the battery that was knackered. Customer had been having the system religously serviced every year since they moved in ( 12 years) by there alarm company problem was that two cups of tea and dust every visit didn't ensure that the battery was okay.

OK fair enough - was there paperwork inside??

Yes, even the user manual.

I Dont feel that paperwork should be left in panel not only in security but also in fire you find that when people leave stuff in panel soon as job is taken over it goes missing or people start playing around with program thinking they know what the matrtix does etc

This is the best then, in London. About 18 yrs ago when i was still doing locksmithing i was called to assist a sectioning of a frail (my bottom) old man. after i had opened the door he was taken away. As i came down the lift with severalpolice officers i joked if i had a parking ticket i would have to be arrested. As it happened i was towed away.................I was parked by the kerb with 4 poilce cars in front of me and 3 behind. Fully sign written van and was well known around that area as a contracting locksmith to the local authourity, police and baliffs.

At the tow depot i was nearly arrested as i went straight to my van to get proof of identity which they insist on and was told i had broken the law by not paying the fine 1st. They wonder why they sit behind 6mm toughend glass..........................

cheers

Oop here in t' north, I know most of the wardens around the city where I work, I don't have any problems parking in town as long as it's not stupid. Hell, they even say hello when I see them, London schmondon, you can keep it.

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

Hi Dave

Really interesting article, the following is a personal view, I believe the trade is fearful of the future when they have no reason to be.

If a company does a good job regardless of them being a member of any trade body, custom will continue to flow.

The trade should not be afraid of screwfix or any other seller, why? the answer is easy, we all know it is not what system a person buys that makes a good alarm system it is the location of equipment and the setting up of the system etc which makes us within the trade 'the experts' and it is that information that we should not easily 'giveaway' plus remember that information is only gained from our experience in dealing with problems over decades and it that experience that is the REAL EARNER.

We have no reason to fear DIY competition because it is my experience that most DIYers are the people that have ALL the false alarm problems, which leads their neighbours to ensure that when they have their alarm system subsequently fitted because of the fear of crime they ensure they 'get it done properly'

Most DIYers fit systems that work initially then after 2 false alarm problems they never use it or turn to the expert's and thensorry they have to pay.

We all know the time waster's and we must learn to politely say the right thing.

I have been asked by many DIYers for help when their system's go wrong and I always say we can fit a proper system but it will cost you!! (especially buyers of the cheap wire free systems)

We have fitted at least 20 complete systems after the customers have experienced the wire free Rexxxxe and the problems of buying fitting and having 'No Idea' of what to do when a problem begin's time and time again especially when it is used the most when they go on holiday, and the neighbours are looking for blood upon their return, plus they have got the new

This is why paperwork should be inside the panel - one of my jobs is a high street chain distribution centre - Gal 512 with max all over the place - loads and loads of zones - no paperwork in sight anywhere!!

The only reference I have is the programming in the panel and when I go back on Thurs I will then write up a log book and mark plans (if I can scrounge some) and it will be stored inside the panel so I don't need to work this stuff out at 3 in the morning !!

hi alsec,

hope you are prepared to share eternal doom with me  mind you, i'd appreciate some sensible company on that journey :P and i prommis not to argue with you

some 37 years or so in this trade, and many many on service, given what was 'hi tech' then and ancient **** now, i never experienced a burn out in all that time put down to a paper fire in the panel - and as a senior engineer it often fell to me to investigate and protect the company if liability issues were in conflict (not claiming to be anything special outside of arguing ability).

there is a posible risk if a lightning strike, which gets the sab and hits the panel, and i have seen this on several occasions, but only with the older steel box bells. the nett result is the panel is charcoal. makes nice ash paterns on floor when you open the lid.

the fact an ounce or two of paper was in the panel, would have made absolutely no difference to the end result - barbaqued electronics and a black skid mark on the wall from the tracks.

chances are many companies do place their info inside the panel for security, and so the follow up engineers have all the info to hand, and that was the reasoning for chubbs policy then (but i bet alarmgard will call this a cowboy practic), maybe different now - any chubb guys on to tell us one way or another? or other company engineers willing to say they do the same?
