Guest cturner24 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I would appreciate some assistance...a common issue I fear?!? Power cut last night caused internal buzzer to go off (but not external bell box). No amount of input codes would reset the alarm. I have the engineer code and tried that also. Also have installation manual but this does not appear to cover the issue from what I can see. Power has now been restored to the house but key pads will not respond at all. No sounds whatsoever - completely dead. They do not respond to any combination of codes. One zone light is permanently on so power is present. Some months ago changed bell box with new battery of course, so I'm isolating this as not being the issue as worked perfectly well up to last night. My suspicion is that it is a battery failure, but what I am not clear about is where batteries are located. I have effectively 4 main units to the alarm (ignoring PIR's etc): 1 outside bell box (recently replaced), 2 keypad panels, 1 larger box (looks like the main control panel. It's tucked away elsewehere in the house). I've never ventured into this box. Beside this main box, but separate, is is a fuse. Is there a battery within this? Has anyone got any suggestions on what I may try before I call out an engineer. There has been no tampering with any of the units - just a mains power cut. I'd appreciate some help here please.
ian.cant Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Certainly sounds like your back-up battery has failed, however this may have also damaged the charging circuits on the main board. I would suggest you contact an engineer to check your system out as simply replacing the battery maybe a waste of time!
FASTCAR Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Yes , the battery is located in the main box , where there is mains voltage. Replace the battery and all should be well, although there is an outside chance that the battery fuse or charging circuit could have gone.

Thanks, I appreciate the advise. Is this main box subject to tamper proofing? ie. when I remove the panel is it likely to set the alarm off? Not a big issue if I do it during the day and let the neighbours know first, just best to warn them prior as a matter of courtesy.
FASTCAR Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Removing the lid should give a tamper alarm (internal sounder). Before opening the cover , remove the mains supply(external siren may sound). If the panel alarms when powered back up , just enter your code....if it doesnt work...call an engineer.
Guest cturner24 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Thanks again. No wonder I've problems. Note on battery states 'battery installed 10/10/96'. Worringly however, the alarm has been serviced several times after this point. I will take the matter up with the service company. Thank you FAST CAR & IAN. CANT for your help. Carl Turner

Carl Turner Just for completeness if anyone else has the same issue. The cause of the fault was indeed a worn out battery. I'm no expert at all but my alarm becomes very eractic and goes off with the internal buzzer when I've had a power cut and then the key pads completely 'lock up' with no means to access any codes. I changed the battery at a cost of
Adi Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 And some more advice is to check the rest of the programming as that has probably defaulted as well. I really can't be ar**** with it anymore.
Guest cturner24 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Thanks Adi - you were quite correct some of the programming had defaulted. Many thanks again for everyones help.
Guest cturner24 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 did some one on this site sent you a installation manual ?tut tut Yes they did and I was grateful for the help. I'm not a crook or up to anything sinister and as it's my alarm, that I paid for, that I use, in my house I am as entitled to this document as anyone. Lets get things into perspective here - we're only talking about an installation manual for a burglar alarm not the blue-prints to a high security building! If someone really wanted to be underhand about its use / contents, it would take them minutes to locate one. I found several within 5 minutes, just not the one relating to an older unit. But then again I did in fact. They are generally widely available on the net. One assumes therefore that the source of these must be professional installers....
