chris53 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Just had a Scantronic 9651 with a 9930 Keypad installed to replace an old TS700 that was fried by lightning. No, they didn't leave an Engineers Manual!! Two queries if anyone can help.. The control panel is making a constant buzzing sound - loud enough to hear through a closed door even with the radio on. I wasn't in when it was fitted, and the engineer gave my better half the "oh they all do that" routine. The old TS 700 was silent, as has been every other alarm system we've ever come across. IS this normal for these units, any idea what's causing it, and should we be asking for a return visit to fix/replace it??? Secondly - the old unit had very loud chimes when the main entry door opened, and when the system was set/unset - which we liked as it warned us if we'd left the door open etc, and could be heard anywhere in the house. The new one makes a feeble bleep which can be heard only if you are stood right next to the keypad - is there an engineers menu that allows us to increase the volume, and if so how do we access it??? All help very much appreciated.
antinode Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 The humming you are refering to is likely mains hum from the transformer inside. You can try tightening any screws holding the tranformer in place which should reduce any noise. Mounting the control panel on rubber washers (ie between the panl and wall through the screw holes) should dampen this noise further. You should remove the mains supply before you attempt any of these remedies! Secondly, a 16 ohm extension speaker can be fitted to the system to produce louder tones if desired. It is wired between + and LS. You can probably pick one up off eBay or something. Check page 31 of the manual to enable this feature. Trade Member
Guest Alarm Guard Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 If the engineer said that the noise was normal, and they all do that, he was partly correct, it is a common problem... but to 'fob off' a customer is in my opinion totally unacceptable. You should not have to put up with a noisy transformer. Insist that they correct the problem or change it for another make of control with quiet running. As for the chime, the volume can be adjusted. Let us know the outcome. Paul
chris53 Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 Many thanks for prompt replies Gents. I'm afraid I'm a complete novice with these things, so don't know how to turn off the system to play with mounting screws etc - I'll probably just trigger the alarm! I'm tempted just to call them back and say it's not acceptable. As for adjusting the volume Paul - can you tell me how to access the engineers menu, and where to find the volume control??
Guest Alarm Guard Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 No. You need to get the engineer to come back and sort both problems. The buzzing is likely to get worse unless the problem is addressed..... and a novice trying to adjust the volume could end up disabling some vital part of programming, so it is best left to the engineer.

OK - good advice. Will update here when we've spoken to the Installers....
chris53 Posted August 22, 2006 Author Posted August 22, 2006 Just to close this one. Engineer fitted a new transformer - silence is golden - then reconnected the internal sounder that the original guy had left off, turned up the volume a bit, and now the whole street knows when we set the alarm, and we know when we accidentally leave the door open - which was just what we wanted. Only failed with several attempts to get hold of an Installer guide - they just kept saying they don't keep spare copies. On the upside, they did give me a number to call if we wanted to know how to do simple things (like adjusting the volume) so I guess that's fair enough... Thanks again for your help....
