arfur mo Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 hi all, interesting thread this one, i've often pondered getting involved with gates, but about 3 years back just before christmas i installed a telephone exchange, hooked in the front panel to it all worked a real treat. so i thought right now for the gates control (came make) easy peazy to just pick up the trigger from the house button. i openned the lid and that was the end of that never to work again, and i had not even offered a screwdriver to them. freezing cold, rain sleet snow blizzards, soaked through and embarrasment as client obviously suspected i'd broken them. so nah! not for me to flipping cold in winter to site on a squidgy mud patch with your chin on the ground peering ito a box i thinks, so i pass all this work on to Old Hand regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
Mick Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 They can be horrible jobs in the winter. Tools need to be packed away by 3.30 in the afternoon, cold weather and wet. Can even be nasty in summer as you can be sure there will be a trench to dig on the hottest days of summer. It should have been easy to find the trigger. But there does seem to be some horribly wired systems about. Some with spiders nexts and plants growing through them too. Found some with a complete lack of earthing to the motors too. Every year I get a few call outs because the original guy who fitted the system has 'disappeared'
JohnP Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Hi Tons of useful comments provided so far, can I add that depending on style of gate ( open bars or closed wood style etc.) the wind can make a huge difference to the weight rating of the gate automation kit you should choose. We do a range of kits that could be suitable, call us on 01604 647555 (sales or tech support) with your gate details and we can suggest a few possible solutions. Regards John. Mick Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Yes- watch out for close boarded timber gates- can be really nasty!
Guest Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Yes- watch out for close boarded timber gates- can be really nasty! Yep fitted a pair of Came Fernie`s to a normal gate, then got a call to say the arms had sheared, 1 1/4 solid bar. They had against my advice "close boarded" them, in a virtual wind tunnel, ker ching as i replaced the arms. Arfur, will take on more gate work now as we did a rolling one last week (you know i recently changed companies, back to my 1st true alarm co as it happens) boss was well impressed with how quick a rolling gate can be fitted and automated. So hes more intrested now i think. Your last lead didnt return call i`m afraid, such is life.and i dont chase. Quick note for you Diy`ers use mechanical for small gates and you`ll never have a black oily drive in 3 yrs time, undergrounds are nice as they are unobtrusive but harder to fit. Its all down to hindge geometry, get that wrong your in a world of pain. Also remember if your garage door is already automatic we can fit an interface and you then have one remote for the gates and your garage. End of sales pitch
