Guest cornwallgas Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Hi again Im after some advice. I would like to put a internet viewable IP camera in my yard for the winter, i sell bottles gas and when it gets cold we tend to loose bottles (every year), we have raised the wall, glass on top with barbed wire too but they still get in? i have driven around late at night trying to catch them at it, often finding people sitting in their cars at the bottom of our T junction on the industrial estate. Apparently having a smoke! our yard is big with no mains power at the bottom where i store gas. Im going to install some wireless PIR's with a receiver and telephone dialer to alert me of people there. i could then check online and report it and drive straight there. From the top of our hopper we can see all the yard and the T junction, i would like an IP camera that i could PTZ from home, the bottles are kept about 50m from the hopper in low light conditions, im going to put lights facing the bottles switchable by the wireless PIR's Any advice will be greatly appreciated on what camera to use. Also advice on what WIRELESS PIR's to use would be appreciated, someone recommended http://www.fmelectronics.co.uk/ they sell wireless PIR's & receivers (any views?)

ian.cant Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 I dont see the point in watching your gas bottles being stolen and then you driving there into a whole boat load of trouble. Spend your money on making them impossible to steal, prevention is the cure in this case!

Hi I agree with Stuart with this one. You definitly need a site survey for this one. Siting of the camera is paramount and will also effect the type of camera and/or bracketry required. We could give you a list of loads of items which a. (with respect) you wouldn't have a clue to put together and b. probably couldn't get hold of and would therefore end up with a multiple thousand pound pile of junk. An alarm is slightly easier. The reason you couldn't get hold of it is not to stop you from DIY, manufacturers request for their own piece of mind that complex CCTV is only installed by experienced personel. Some kit we are not allowed to install until we go on a manufacturers training course. FM Electronics which Roger recommended is a good company, they have been around donkies of years, which is a good sign. Another consideration is a company called Radio Security Systems (I wonder how long it took them to come up with that name?) they specialise in DIY solutions for outdoor radio systems aimed at farmers (alarm only) their website is here. Guest Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 A couple of points, i`m pretty sure broken glass isnt allowed anymore, razor wire is but there is a minimum height restriction, i hope you are aware of this. You also need to have warning signs in public view indicating anti-scaling devices are being used. Because scumbag thief who cuts off hand or foot scaling your walls will be in for a nice buntz after he takes you to court. On the physical side of things, try using some quality chain and decent padlocks, maybe even invest in a "ground anchor" thats a device burried into the ground to secure motorbikes. If its good enough for a 10 k bike its got to enhance your gas cylinders. Your going along the right lines but i would keep the site well lit at all times. As for the cameras i would agree with the above and get aprofessional in, there are also some rules you have to adhere to as well. Hope this helps, as always physical security is the 1st line of making your property secure.
kka Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 you have being given a lot of good info here, but i tend to sit with ian on this one, once these people see cameras, they will just cover there faces. imo also, you need to boost up you security (physical) around these gas cylinders. get a pro in, one that has a look at the site and will give you a free quote. think about this. a magician art is magic, simply put an illussion, a con, making you think something magical has happened, so alongside that sign saying anti vandal whatever, put another sign saying, hidden cctv in progress, and god forbid that it is one of your employees that is commiting this crime Kevin Scott. baywatch Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 You can use razorwire above 2.5 meters legally as long as you use signs. We also use a system called Razorspike which has home office approval if used with the correct signs. Good physical security is essential, for a camera you could consider a webserver which you can then use with any cameras or a dvr with Internet access. This gives you more flexibility and allows you to use lower light cameras.

Once again the Good physical security is mentioned.
