Guest geoffs Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Hi. I have an //.National Installer.// Galaxy 16+ that is not monitored (I believe), but is still connected to the phone line. Problem is that I now have ADSL and want to add filters to all the phone connections, or better still, take the alarm system off the line. I imagine disconnecting the phone line will annoy the unit so can anyone help with the procedure or can I just power the alarm down, wire a filter in at the control panel, and switch on again? This does raise the question as to why my alarm is connected to the phone? Thanks in advance, Geoff.
Guest geoffs Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Was the alarm in the premises before you moved in? Yes. It looks like the alarm was fitted when the house was built about 3 yrs ago.
Guest geoffs Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 If you open the panel or mess with it in any way it will go into alarm. I would suggest fitting the filter to the line where it is connected outside the box. If line monitoring has been enabled it will sound after a delay when you disconnect the line, just connect your filter and reconnect the line Problem is that the connection between the box and the panel is hard-wired at both ends! I shall look into getting a ADSL wallplate and wiring the box end into that. Thanks.
Guest geoffs Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 It could well be that the alarm was originally monitored. Doing anything with it could produce issues... If the alarm no longer uses the phone system, just leave it.Even better, the alarm is well overdue for a service. Get that done and verify the phone situation with the engineer. Paul //.National Installer.// have ignored my emails about information on my system - I had to source a user manual on-line. I have a background in electronic and mechanical engineering, and am a computer engineer by trade, so I was going to service the system myself (simple sensor cleaning and battery checks at least). However, I would dearly like to remove the alarm from the phone line. I suppose I am going to need someone who knows what they are doing for this one? What about engineer and master alarm codes? I assume //.National Installer.// has these? Thanks, Geoff.
Guest geoffs Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 If the alarm is not using the phone line, it doesn't need a filter Sorry about the cross posting! How do I determine if the alarm is not using the line? It certainly complained when the phone line went off for a while - the panel logged a telecoms failure.
Guest geoffs Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 If it reported telcom fail then it is definetly on the tel line. And yes //.National Installer.// will have these codes. You will need someone to come and take that system over for you Yes, that's what I thought. Also, I don't want someone to take the system over. I want to look after the system myself as I am quite capable. Thanks for the replies.
amateurandy Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 If the alarm is not using the phone line, it doesn't need a filter If it's connected to the phone line in any way, even if it's not programmed to use it, it WILL need a filter or Broadband may be affected. Even if it's powered off (but connected) it should have a filter. Anything connected to a phone line with Broadband needs a filter. Ther are discussions elsewhere (and I'm sure the pro's that you WILL need know anyway) on what exactly you need to do to wire an alarm in when broadband is present. Not least is whether it uses normal PSTN phone calls or Redcare to signal.
