Storm Or Modulator?

Got a bit of a weird problem here. Installed a 4 cam cctv system on a domestic premises. DVR in attic, remote control extender, seperate rg59 to aux input in tv downstairs and modulator in attic to sent signal through 8 way amp to rest of tv's in house. Received a phone call the other day off the customer complaining that her sky has keept freezing the last few days, and her remote magic eye for sky doess not work upstairs anymore. Because the install was last monday she is basically blaming the cctv for this. The weird thig is that it isn't connected to her sky at all, surely this couldn't cause a problem like this could it? It also dawned on me that we had a thunder storm last wed which may be the cause. Anyone had a similar problems or have any sugestions as the house is quite a distance away.

Thanks Paul

Not quite sure what you mean? Ther is RG59 direct from DVR to downstairs tv, wireless remote extender to attic (only cable to this is psu 12v), and finally out of DVR into modulator, from this to a dc combiner or Y splitter which splits aeriel coming in with modulator to make 1 output which goes into the antenna input in the 8 way amp. All this then gets distributed throughout the house.

Its not the new remote sender youve used causing a problem and blocking the sky remote sender is it?

What do they define as freezing?

Could be a combination of both, tell them to power down the sky box ;)

in that case undo what you did and see if the fault goes away. Also check you not feeding to much rf into the sky box (ie is your dis amp turned up etc)

The crashing sky is a concern and probably related to the other fault.

DO you have sky at home could you temp swap boxes to see

We stoped using RF-mods for this reason.

When ever the tv or the sky plays up they phone us saying you where last to touch it.

Funny you've had the same.

We are always the last to touch it as well, had one with the aerial fitters van on the dvr, but customer swore they hadn't been there.

Ive had this before, the rf modulator knocks out sky digi-eye if you connect straight into the rf signal coming out of the sky box. If the 8way amp is after the sky box that is your problem.

The solution is to connect the rf feed in before it gets into the sky box, so perhaps use the rg59 you have run downstairs to send the rf feed direct into the back of the skybox.

The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct!

(Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

If the 'magic eye' is the little gismo from sky that plugs into RF2 of the Sky Box this could be bad news.

The Sky Box chucks voltage down the coax to power the little beast. If the TV amps have been proffesionaly fitted they could be the clever type that channel this voltage. In which case your modulator could have isolated the power getting through.

Just a thought.

Thanks for all your replies guys. If he calls me this week to get me round there i will try disconnecting what i have done. I remember having the freezing problem on my sky when we had a storm once, had to take sky card out and reset box after a few mins. What your saying seems to make sense. For some reason when i connected the modulator to tv amp i got a pretty good pic on all tv's except the main one downstairs with the sky box. The pic was really bad and lots of interference. This is why i ran a seperate rg59 to it. It is difficult to see where everything is going as the aerial system has been installed into walls as house was built. It must be that the main antenna in is going straight into sky box and rf out 2 is going into attic to 8 way amp.

Thanks again
