You Get What You Pay For?

I occassionally supply the VNC743 camera from EVS in Russia for specialist applications. It is possibly the most expensive 1/3" monochrome camera on the CCTV circuit at the moment however it does have a realistic sensitivity of 0.000004 lux, pretty low!!

This product obviously benefits from a decent lens. I searched around and eventually decided on a 1/3" 5-50mm Aspherical F1.4 'Advanced' High quality Japanese optics designed for High performance cameras. I thought for an asperical lens it was exceptional value (too good to be true) so I telephoned the distributor to confirm a. the F-stop, b. the lens was genuinely aspherical and c. availability

All of the above was confirmewd with 11 in stock so I applied my mark-up, checked with my customer who ordered 3 and placed the order.

Imagine my surprise when this morning what turned up was a cheap chinese F1.6 non aspherical lens, probably worth 1/3 of what I had paid.

What concerns me is the following

- Distibution is tantamount to mail order, I believe that this whole transaction has overstepped the mark legally and that I have the right to recieve a product of the same spec for the same price. The distributor are not able to offer me this, and indeed I am not able to source the same for the same price elsewhere. This means that in order to satisfy my customer I must now make a loss on the lens.

- Is this overspeccing gone mad? Have said distributor ever stocked and supplied aspherical lenses at cut prices or do they just rely on the fact that their customers do not check/ know the difference, the end user is unlikely to notice the difference except in extreme circumstances but if I go ahead and supply this I have compromised my professional integrity surrendering to the slipping standards within the cctv industry. How many have they sold and scammed people with up to now? Is this fraud?

- None of the staff at the distributor actually seemed to know what F-stop related too, nor what the advantages of Asperical were, even after I tried to explain.

What is interesting is that this is not unique to this distributor, ADI are guilty of most of the above however they did not attempt to supply me an 'alternative' at the same price without my consent.

I am all for a quality standard within the CCTV industry so that everyone can make a fair price for providing a quality product and service, arm yourselves with bows red indians :-)

Id push it mate. If someone quoted me a price id expect that price to remain for that part for 30 days, if not id want to know why. I assume you have gone down the 'you have obviously sent me the wrong part' route and they have said tough? If so id definetly push it, what you got on paper?

It is concerning how some parts of the cctv industry are going with the bargain basement kit, but this stuff has always been available and people only tend to use it once

Agreed

Thanks for your honesty Chris. I have spoken to ADI this morning and they have confirmed that Tamron have doubled the price overnight which is why they no longer supply the same lens.

My only real gripe is that I phoned to double check before quoting as it seemed too good to be true. This has cost me money.

I guess I will have to bite the bullet, pay the extra and order the 5-60mm on your site assuming that this is Aspherical?

Sorry for the mistake it was totally our fault, I will send you the upgraded lenses as direct replacements (no cost to you) as I think that is only fair under the circumstances)

Once again sorry

Chris
