Guest sprog
Having always been a tinkerer and up for a challenge, I'm setting out on a new venture! My goal is to design and build, from the ground up, my new home security system. My current objectives are: - PC Control and Monitoring with remote control access from any net equipped device. (Can easily do this securely) - Self contained control unit in case of PC failure. (Likely based on PIC microprocessor(s)). - Capability to add a variety of sensors from PIR to Temperature/Motion/Active IR/whatever. - Capability to add camera's with face recognition algorithms/Biometric sensors. (Particularly usefull at the front door as a "Friend or Foe" system). I'm sure the feature list will grow a bit as I draw up basic designs. However, I could use a little input right now from anyone "in the know". I am looking for some sensors, initially just PIR ones with specifications in terms of input voltage, output signal type (analogue strength or digital "detected/not detected") and ideally fairly low cost. I'm working on a website which will "Blog" the project for anyone who wants to follow I'll post the URL shortly.
Guest sprog
Other information that would be usefull: What is the current "hot technology" in security systems? What kind of issues are commonly encountered and cause the biggest headache? What is most of your (professionals) time spent fixing? If you could make one change to your favourite system, what would it be? Don't hold back here. I'm after design ideas. Even if it sounds ridiculous! (Ok, a system that goes and does the shopping may be overkill, but I'm after ideas here).

(Ok, a system that goes and does the shopping may be overkill, but I'm after ideas here). no probs, but just don't marry it seriously sprogs, the market is infested with 'clever' security systems, just hunt around the internet, from those that are intruder systems and wanna be fire alarms or access control and visa versy. to be honest there is a point where system integration is just total degeneration, the calls on such schemes often require vastly different equipment as well as installation technique's, and best along with a deep understanding of each technology to get reliable operation. place that thought against some guys who have been in intruder or fire only for many years, and still manage to cod's it up. by all means have some fun, grab your 'building blocks' off ebay, bolt them together and enjoy the b-b-q that might follow, but if this is a serious idea/project i would advise against it. put it this way, you buy a hi fi system it has the usual cd player, radio, tape decks and plynth, one fault on the amplifier and everything is very very silent, so lesson learned not to put too many eggs in one basket. transpose this to you automation, you could have your windows and garage doors openning and closing to he strains of swan lake at 4 in the morning, much to the bemusment of you neighbours. if i were going down this route i would base designs on a pc and a pic 'blower', that way you can mod the program or tweek your idea's. regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!! Well if you are looking for a panel which can be interogated via a p.c my obvious choice would be a galaxy, but i have to agree with previous comment it is a hard task for some one not in the trade...good luck though

Guest sprog
Few interesting ideas. William of Occam once said "one should not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to explain anything". I'm a firm believer in the marrying of technology and the KISS principle (Keep it simple, stupid). What I have observed to date is a few systems are very plain, basic and don't do much other than ring a bell if a sensor is triggered. At the other end of the scale are the hugely expensive hi-tech supposedly integrated systems. However, I have yet to see a modular expandable system targetted at the home consumer with a realistic price tag and the features listed above. I guess I should add to the "requirements" that as well as being secure, it should be easy to maintain and operate both from an "Engineers" perspective and the users. As for e-bay, well I'm not a believer personally I prefer to use products straight from the manufacturer when prototyping - less chance of some incompentent frying them with a few 1000 volts of static and sticking them up on a 99p auction... That's probably a good question to ask actually. What is a rough figure for a high end (galaxy or similar) system with PC software, say 5 PIR's, Carbon Monoxide & Smoke detectors and a couple of cameras? (including or excluding installation but specify which please)
