Guest waz Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Please can someone help me? I have never used a burgular alarm before and having been in our house for 6 months it went off for the first time yesterday when a decorator wiped a sensor down. We were able to dis-arm using the access code, but now want to turn the power off in the house to do some electrical work. However, this sets off the alarm. I phoned the company who installed and even though we are not under contract the guy suggested the battery needs changing and that it would be cheapest to do this myself. I started to open the case and that caused the tamper alarm to go off. Do I have to just do that with the alarm going off, or can I completely disarm and get on with my life or at least until I get a new battery?
Alarm Protection Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Hi Waz, I would not encourage people to open the panel up as there is 240v going to it but if you have opened it and disconnected the battery then there should be a fused spur next to the panel. Flip the fuse out of that and the panel will power down. Remember though if your bell does sound then the battery in that is still functioning and you will need to disable the battery at the bell. The best option would be for an approved installer to come out and power down the system for you and after your electrical work has finished get him back to service the system. Different installers prices vary so phone around say 4 and compare prices. I am surprised that the company you phoned told you to change the battery yourself?? List your area on here and there will be someone who could come out to see your system. !
arfur mo Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 hi waz, i'm really surprised the guy did not ofer comming out, the 9200 is a bit of a relic so he could have advised you on an upgrade, better for you and more buisness for him. to follow on from scottish engineers advice, as an end user no one can be keen to advise you to remove the lid. we do't know the quality or care of installation, and doing so may dislodge the battery or a wire causing you harm or inconvenience. should you proceed and remove the fuse, i have known for the spur to be fed through the casing so may not remove the risk of shock. and it has happened that the programming is lost or corrupted when this is done so you will need the default codes at that stage. your best and so advised option is to get him or a competant engineer to service your system, if you are worried about cost, concider it against the shock of suffering an intrusion and the likely damage and loss. failing that and totally at your own risk -: 1) power down 2) remove lid with great caution 3) siren will sound 4) code stops it (hopefully) 5) replace battery ensuring to connect correct polarity of leads 6) siren sounds 7) code stops it (more hopefully) 8) close lid 9) restore fuse 10) enter code to reset panel. 11) test to see if system works ie sets, trip detector to sounds sirens and unsets 12) still call an engineer to service it regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
Guest waz Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Thanks to you both. It seems getting an expert in is the way fwd.
