Help! - Installing Mag Door Contacts

Recommended Posts

Although my alarm system will not be certificated I am sure it will serve its function as part of my home security improvements very well. It seems relativily easy to install and there are instructions for testing and servicing.

May as well give it a go.

Hell I have seen many jobs by so called professional fitters which are a disgrace to the industry. Who know your standards may well be better than most on this board!

Who knows.

Good luck

with regards to get the pro's in

How many of us here do DIY?

do you all get in painters to do the front room or joiners to put up shelves?

No-you have a go yourself because it's your house and as long as it's not dangerous or over your head. Then you ask for a pro to help you out.

I would however recommend the member asking for help does not attempt the mains supply himself.

There are always going to be folks who want to try things themselves and as long as we have the likes of B+Q selling kits aimed at the DIYer then it will continue.

Pete

You missed the point. He has already bought an alarm system so has not considered using a company. The shelf comparrison is naff as it's still at his own risk.If it's does not work,he only has himself to blame.

I'm not saying it's easy with regards to your splash of paint here etc but i see it all the time with some house holders because it's their house then they have the false confidence that they can try and do anything.

I can paint and can make a good job so why would i pay to have tradesmen to do it?

I don't like doing it but it saves money.

Spot on :!:

PS It's nice to have someone here who can spell and also takes the time to construct a sentence! (OK, several)

PPS I don't know what panel you've got, but it probably has a "global tamper loop" - did you spot that and understand how it's wired up? Your original question hinted maybe not..............

oih! what you trying to say

just joking :)

but your being a bit unfair andy, as the o/p says not many installation books or instruction sheets show you a door contact 'as is', just the electrical diagram of one with symbols, not how to instal it even like how deep to drill in the case of flush contacts or where best position is on the frame, how far from the corner and so on.

thats why you often see one contact fitted on a double leaf door installed to the leading edge, amatures don't realise the trling leaf can be left open and the alarm will still set, we know of that danger, another is in rder to sense both leaves the contact is connected by a fly lead.

many on here are to ready to advise people by shouting "get a pro as you don't know' but nor did we until we were shown, there were no indication on the back of my farleys rusk box how to fit a contact.

a door contact is the most basic of detection devices, so i like and encourage it when we are asked, imo it show's the poster wants to do it right but by himself not just guess at it or slash it in. this indicates to me at least if he can't sus it out he will turn to a 'pro' and whats wrong with that guys?

yes he is always advised to get a pro in, but don'y knock them just because if they don't agree to it as we are all entitled to try something which is not our own trade and accept the risks involved even those we are not aware of.

Where would you fit it then arfur?

Top or bottom? Middle?

Just asking................

After seeing over the yrs many doors both metal and timber forced open its a tough choice and i find depends a lot on the locking systems involved.

cheers
