Got rid of norton.

could be update.

If me bottom right hand corner there are 8 in there.

From bits and peices that i have read, i did think memory. Cant things stay on the hard drive till needed?

Ill sort some memory

256MB is almost certainly not enough, but Task Manager will tell you for sure very quickly - do you know how to run and interpret it?

Also, once you've got the memory (before it will probably be very slow) do a disk cleanup and defrag.

Start

Run

Msconfig.exe

Click Startup tab

If you have a million items checked to run on start this could be slowing down the boot up as they all load in.

Messy fix would be to uncheck all the unnecessarys and run like that. Be aware, that a lot of apps will re-enable themselves to load on start even if you uncheck this way, and a more perminent (reg hack) solution may be required.

Be careful not to disable anything important (like laptop mouse drivers).

As others have said 512mb is a minimum for XP (even if good old microsoft say it will run ok with 256, WTF do they know)

The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct!

(Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

Were you brave enough to check "issues" in ccleaner and delete what it found?

I do that regularly, but always save the backup when prompted.

I do a disk clean up a de frag about every 2 weeks or so.

I did get a clean up prog from this site which i run often.

Excellent, though for normal use once a month is plenty.

Have you tried the Microsoft Registry cleaner in the Full Service scan at http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm ?

It works well, just run the scanner but choose "customise" and only run the Registry Cleaner. The other tools are OK but very slow online and you can do the same things yourself.
