Guest BrianT Posted May 18, 2003 Posted May 18, 2003 I'm just curious to see if anyone out there is using computer systems to monitor, maintain and access residential security systems. I know in the US and UK that people are dialing into their computers and monitoring their homes from thousands of miles away but I'm wondering about the software side of things. Is their specialised security software out there that you can install on your computer that will run your security system (All detection points would be wireless e.g. Mag Contacts, PIRS etc). This system would operate as a wireless LAN. I have been researching the wireless aspect of security systems and the cost involved to install one is prohibitive in Ireland. Also most companies in Ireland aren't comfortable with the wireless systems and push customers towards the wired version (In my opinion). What I'm trying to do is to see if their is a system out there that would allow you to install a software package onto a customers computer system and then add nearly all the detection devices off this system using wireless LAN technology. ANY IDEAS? Brian
An Engineer Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 I've never heard of anything like this before but I think it's a great idea. Maybe you should copyright it. One downside, however, might be cost. Can you imagine the price of a door contact, or PIR? Warwick Service Engineer My opinions may not reflect those of my employer, managers, colleagues, customers, friends, family or pet rabbit.
Guest bluehall Posted May 24, 2003 Posted May 24, 2003 Ive been thinking along similar lines Brian, and have found a microprocessor that can be linked to a an alarms serial port (remote key pad port (assuming your alarm has one)) this then converts the serial connection to 10 base T, which can be accessed accross a network. If you need any more info drop me an email and I will give you technical specs. D
Guest GrahamB Posted July 6, 2003 Posted July 6, 2003 I have an Ademco Galaxy C60 system and want to access it via serial port to detect Motion Sensors etc. and then link to a Home Automation system. I can access the serial port remotely using a Serial to IP converter but need to understand a bit about the protocol to understand how to interpret the Controller responses. Any ideas ? Graham
Guest Adrian Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Well this one has gone beond me! but it sounds good. Adrian B)
Guest dale Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Just buy the Ethernet Module - Galaxy RS485 to TCP/IP interface, this will convert all the data to TCP/IP, then im sure you can write a bit of software to periodically query the system status. The other alternative is listen to the data going to the RKP (as I think this is bog standard RS232) then work out what control signal shows an alarm activation in what zones and respond accordingly.
Guest dale Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 If its RS485 then you might want to look at: http://www.hw.cz/english/docs/rs485/rs485.html for help on RS485, http://chaokhun.kmitl.ac.th/~kswichit/PC48...5/PC_Rs485.html and this for how to build a device to change RS232C to RS485.
Guest Oz Paul Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 Try here Its a flash site, just click lantronix then device servers then uds-10 Its a box that converts RS232 or 485 to TCP/IP We use them all the tie for connecting door controllers to the administration computer over the LAN or WAN. Would only need a wireless bridge setup etc to be applicable to this.
Guest dale Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 Why is it they never tell you how much these things cost on their website? So how much are these things Oz Paul? Im assuming you will still need to write your own software to intergrate into a security system as this device just acts as a protocol coverter?
