Silence alarm / Engineer mode

Dear All,

I have a Scantronic 9800, installed long ago before I lived here, the engineer who installed it now long gone.

A month or so ago, the 12V battery in the control panel failed to work when I turned the electricity off and the alarm went off when i switched it back on again. I reset the alarm but it then went off about every 10 mins until i opened up the control panel and removed said battery.

I bought and fitted a new battery, but don't think I did a very good job (the internal bell sounding all through the process certainly didn't help my concentration). The tamper has since been triggered on a number of occasions with just vibration around the control panel, so i think i didn't fit the panel back properly.

After my original horrendous afternoon with the alarm going off every 10 mins, I now shake whenever it goes off and am really not keen about reopening the panel and trying to refit it.

My questions are:

a) is there a way I can remove the panel and refit it properly without triggering the alarm?

and

B) how can I get into engineer mode? This is described in my installation manual, but only says how to get there as part of the initial power up.

It looks like it's possible to set "bell delay" to 7 (infinite) and "continuous sounder" to 0 (bell follow), which I think this should make the external and internal bells silent.

All comments gratefully received, as my only solution after that is to wear earplugs and just go for it or pay my local security company about 200 quid...

Yours hopefully, Debbie

£200 seems abit steep shop around.

The only way to get into the panel without causing a tamper is to 1st put the panel into engineer mode. You cant do it without the engineer code an engineer can default the engineer code but it will mean that the whole system would require reprogramming.

The problem you have with the internal sounder keeps going whenever theres a slight vibration around the panel sounds like the tamper switch requires a slight adjustment.

When you open the panel you will see the tamper switch usually top rhs just bend it a little so that it doesnt have to travel so far to switch.

I would strongly advise that you get your system serviced the failed battery could of damaged the charging circuit which in turn is damaging your new battery. And thats just for starters :)

P.s. for example of what you should be paying we would charge £48.00 to take over your maint plus parts plus £38.00 per hr over the 1st hr all plus vat.

We,re not the cheapest but our engineers would probably be able to default and reprog your system find and repair your faults within the 1st hr so present good value.

Pete :)

Well thank you for the post. My local firm charges £85 to adopt the alarm and £85 per annum, which includes an initial check/service, plus VAT. Then it's just £64 +VAT per hour for any subsequent call outs. These guys make plumbers look cheap.

I did speak to 2 others - one was dearer and the other a bit cheaper but 15 miles away. They all insist on an adoption and yearly fee though. No one will just do a service.

So I am really loathe to use their services. The battery I removed is completely undamaged. ie it hasn't leaked or anything. What could it have damaged in my charging circuit? And what else should be checked? Is there any way i can buy a book on how to understand my alarm. How do you become familiar with alarms?

Many thanks. Debbie

Jeez I'm obviously far too kind to my customers £64 an hour plus VAT would horrify most of em!!

Can't believe no firms are willing to just service the system - I think Pete's prices reflect what most of us would charge. I agree with Pete shop around or give an idea as to your location - not address and maybe one of the forum members may be local.

Hi there,

I'm in Chalfont St Peter, Bucks, which is about 5 miles from Amersham. If there are any reasonbly priced engineers in my area, I'd really like to hear from you. Especially as I got home to the alarm ringing with Control Panel tamper again tonight!

Regards, Debbie

ps. The last 2 times my alarm went off (the only times since the new battery went in) it was at the same time as the electricity tripped out.

I'm pretty worried I've done something stupid while putting the new battery in. All I did was connect it up and close the box. I couldn't have connected the wrong terminals up could I?

(Aside: moral of this tale is don't mess with what you don't understand)

Also, if I wanted just to rip it all out (and I really do after this lot), do i have to employ someone to do it or is it a reasonably easy task.

Debbie,

sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing and the lack of reasonably priced & willing service engineers in your area - I can't help directly, being in Bonnie Scotland.

What is showing up on the key pad after an alarm?

Old 9800's have a known problem of the front access panel sitting off the panel tamper switch (covered in an earlier reply). If you can advise what shows on the RKP (a combination of a red l.e.d. , a letter and possibly a number) we might be able to help. That said it looks like the system really needs that service. It would be a real shame to rip it all out as I have lots of old 9800's still working fine.

Regards,

George

Hi,

the stand-by battery on your system requires to be replaced. Strongly recommend that the system be serviced by an alarm engineer. The size of battery will probably be 3amp or more. If you post your whereabouts, there is a good chance one of the engineers on the Forum will be able to help you out.

Regards,

George
