SFraser
Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and just trying to get up-to-speed before I choose and fit my own system. We are just about to refurbish our flat and this seems like an ideal time to fit an alarm. I was thinking of a Texecom panel but could do with your thoughts on PIR's. The rooms in the flat are pretty big and have 14.5ft ceilings. Also the lounge is south facing and gets pretty hot in summer, will this cause false alarms for the PIR's? I had read this somewhere. Anyway, your thoughts on what device would be best would be appreciated. Many thanks, Scott

Many thanks, Scott Hi Scott, a warm welcome to the forum, without seeing your premises ourselves, and talking over what your exact needs are, any advice given can and is only very general. the Texecom panels are fine, as like everyone else we all have our preferences and i use Gardtec. so you will get some biased opinions accordingly as to any make used. with detectors don't go for the cheapest available, as false alarms are never ever a good part of a good 'bargain'. look at Rockonet, Optex and Scantronic for starters, there are liturally thousands to choose from. i would recommend you consider dual detection (Dual Tec) as these offer superior anti false alarm qualities, well worth the additional cost, and it's going to be protecting you for a long time to come. if you have a dog or cats a few pounds more you can have pet ressistant, allowing the pet to roam free with the system on, but read the instructions very carefully as to where to site and how to set them up. as for the Sun through the windows, especially where the sun is reflected off a shiny surface like a table can cause problems especially in high sun spot activity periods, so if you can site the detector looking away from the window all the better. this usually means a more awkward and longer cable run, but then you are refurbishing your flat so it is far less of a problem to make good. make sure though your intended curtains will not obstruct the field of view of the detector, and that applies to any speakers or shelves. regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!! Many thanks, Scott [/quote Hi scott I have used texecom panels for along time in domstic uses and have always thought them very user friendly so you have made a good choice in the panels but first of all you have to think on what your situation is have you got pets, open fires etc.. if you have pets i think the best P.I.R,s you can get for this is the mercury collection of pet P.I.Rs but this depends on your pet sizes....So make sure you take these into acount before you place your order... The best P.I.Rs i have found are pyronix espeically the quads i think there resonably priced and do the job nicely... Make sure your P.I.Rs are not looking directly at windows and fires(even gas fires) and i waould suggest a duel tec detector in the kitchen this will reduce false alarms when you go out and leave your sunday roast in the over(not that i would recomend that).. I would also seal the screw holes and cable entrys to your P.I.Rs to prevent thunder flies in the summer getting in there(not that there the easeist thing to stop) so seal them as tight as you can make sure they look at nothing that could cause them to false alarm. I hope this has been helpfull to you... Alex
