Silencing A Bellbox When Removing An Old Panel

I'm about to rip out an old Texecom Veritas 8C from my house that I'm working on. It's going to be replaced eventually once the building work is finished. My concern is noise from the belbox. When I open the panel I know the tamper will set the bellbox ringing. Hopefully this will stop within 15 mins but... How long would I be looking at it ringing if there wasn't a timeout set until the internal battery died? Also can I make the bellbox stop ringing without either putting in a new panel yet or accessing the bellbox (no ladders on site yet)?

cheers all.

POST EDITED - i should not have to point out this is a security forum to assist with the simpler faults the DIY er might have, but not in how to disable alarms systems. guys please think before posting something which may assist an intruder, subsequent answers referring to how to disable/overcome the external siren will be deleted - ARFUR

You might want to consider paying an alarm company to do that for you, unless you installed and know what's involved (which it doesn't sound like). They will have the right safety equipment, tools and know-how to do it as quickly as possible with minimal disturbance.

It should be a relatively quick and not too expensive job.

I installed my own system and bellbox, but don't fancy trying to disable it - after all it's designed to be difficult to turn off!

Any pro's care to suggest a ball-park cost or range of likely charges?

COMMENT martlewise has it in one and not a pro either - Arfur

Hi, if theres still going to be mains in the property, then you could just get a 12v transformer and connect it to the bell +/- wires then plug it in to a nearby socket. EDITED as unsafe in public area comment - Arfur so you aren't talking hours!!

cheers
