Richard
Hi, I'm new to this forum so please be gentle I was about to buy a Sterling 10 (with Vocaliser and Keystone wireless receiver) I decided to check out opinion first. How glad am I that I came across you. So, it looks like I need to start again in my research I'm after an Intruduer Alarm with the following features .... - Wired system with central panel and 2 remote keypads (front door and back door) - Autodial (to call several numbers including my mobile, maybe even SMS?, when the alarm is triggered) - wireless remote keyfobs for set/reset (to reset the alarm before putting car in garage) I would really appreciate any advice

They want something decent and reliable. hi richard as it's for older people, i'd suggest get a panel which can use proximity tags or radio fobs, just takes a lot of the hassle out of the learning curve. i agree with others the texecom voice dialler is the mutts nutts, but you need the more expensive version for text. there is has also been several problems reported if texting to an Orange Mobil's, but i don't know what or why. there are many good panels out there, with security kit it is always best to buy from a source who can support you, might cost more but the advice on hand is well worth it. if you want the whole deal in a box then look at the Gardtec CPX or G595 range, both have the advantage of a simple voice dialer built, in which also offer text messages. both accept radio receivers and you can have the G-Tag keypads on the G595 also on the CPX but needs a sensor reader as an additional item. if you do fit yourself, mark the cables at the panel end (use a CD Marker Pen) as to where they go to, so if you do get stuck and have to call an engineer in, you will save his time so on his costs. make each and every connection very very carefully, 'insert and pull' firmly each wire to ensure it is gripped and have no bare inner's showing, do not overly stress the terminals with a PSi tork wrench approach. be tidy dressing wires and allow several inches of slack cable for servicing or later replacement. the neatness is very important, as if an engineer looks at a birds nest he will not be very confident in your ability, this may cost you more as most of us will want to 'sort it' to a minimum pro standard. best of luck with the project regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!! kka
agreed, take your time, neatness does not just look good, but will save time later if you have any problems. if you are diy ing then time does not matter, what more important is a good job. They want something decent and reliable. did you get a price from the trade before hand? if the sites a new build and when you allow for your time and fitting in with other contractors its usually as cheap to get a man in - would stop you getting the wrong thing and give you some support afterwards ie insurance requirments, guarentees etc - and there should be a zero vat rating? you could wire the property yourself as this is a big saving -but if your parents then get a problem at silly hour in the morning they would have someone to call not saying dont diy but there may be reasons in this instance when its better to buy someones services in angus
