andymac
8 core screened with a foil screen. Thanks Sparky, I thought i'd have to use armoured cable or something. So is geneal alarm cable fully waterproof, or will water ingress with time if buried. Thanks
andymac
but run it through flexi copex conduit first not just burying it i always run copex or a duct thro first be for any cable. , thanks for your help, just one more question, how deep should i bury it? Guest
, thanks for your help, just one more question, how deep should i bury it? Andy Andy You need an alarm cable with a poly PJ sheath. You can buy this from any decent cable supplier. Normally sold in 12 core cable. You can bury this directly in the ground. Obviously it won't stand a direct shovel so be careful where it is laid. morph
8 core screened with a foil screen, is not designed to be buried or hung on a catenary wire. PJ Type cable is not suitable for direct burial. Go along to your localDrain center they do proper ducting from
Guest anguscanplay
also a cable run outside of the protected area must be itself protected from mechanical damage so no going over head either

luggsey
minimum 36 inches says my little book of regulationsangus A 3' trench Angus! It's only 18" min by BS 7671. Easy option is Armoured cable, depending on the system you have fitted and the chance of 240v power in the shed you could two wire the deterctor with a PSU in the shed and save on the ammount of cable cores, or as DP said run in ducting and pull in an alarm cable suitable for duct work, it's going to be hard for you to get a short length of that so a length of cut armour cable 1.0mm2 with the required ammount of cores will work well. If you want a really cheap job not to standard but will work, buy a roll of 20mm copex flexible conduit and pull an alarm cable into it before burrying it >18" under ground. Copex is waterproof and as long as both ends are inside it should be ok, don't forget to use tampered joint boxes inside if you have too! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Life is like a box of chocolates, some bugger always gets the nice ones! arfur mo
there seems a lot of tip toeing arround the edges of regs in this thread. what is wrong with a legnth of electrical conduit specifically designed for direct burial and the mechanical protection of high voltage cables (even water pipe - here we go again ), then use standard low voltage alarm cable withint it? seems KISS should be more prevalant. regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
