jonno
Hi to all. Firstly, I haven't really a clue about alarm systems so please excuse my ignorance. I recently moved into a house with a Scantronic 9200 system. Last week during working hours there was a brief local power cut & my neighbour told me the alarm (although unset) went off & was ringing for approx 20 mins (it makes a heck of a noise). Didn't touch it afterwards as I didn't know if anything needed doing to it. Last night when we were out with the alarm unset, it apparently went off twice. Does anyone know what the problem might be ? I am happy to get someone round to check/service it - I just haven't a clue what might need to be done & whether a call-out would be necessary. And I'd like to avoid being unjustly branded a neighbour from hell ! Many thanks in advance for any help. Jonno.

It definitely needs a service at least, and ideally a support contract (and monitoring if it's capable and you want it). Not a job for the self-confessed clueless amateur and you would need engineering manuals and details that you probably don't have and can't be obtained here. Contact 3 reputable local firms to get a quote. If you can get a recommendation via a trusted friend so much the better. To be more specific, the reason it went off during the power cut is probably a "dead" battery - it's supposed to work normally through many hours of a mains interruption. As for going off when unset that could be anything, but a good engineer will find out what and fix it. Note that some alarms can be permanently damaged by a flat battery. Even if you don't want the alarm you really need a professional to decommision it properly without more disturbance of the neighbours.
jonno
Andy Many thanks for your advice & swift response. Can you or anyone else out there tell me: Would this site be a place to find reputable engineers local to west London (either via listing or recommendation) ? And is a Scantronic 9200 a decent alarm system, or is it a bit dated & would be better replaced by something more up-to-date ? All advice much appreciated. Jonno. You're welcome; just happen to be around. There are listings on here somewhere of NSI/SSAIB firms by area. Hopefully someone will come by later today and post a link (and comment on the 9200). I do know that in general most of the pro's seem to rate Scantronic as reliable, robust long-life kit, though every firm will have its favourites that they use regularly. arfur mo
hi Andy, your avatar has your location as 'London' but it's a big place, so what part would help as depends where you are who will offer assistance. 1st point, your 9200 panel is very highly unlikely me thinks to conform for monitoring and Police Response purposes unless a legacy system, so without the panel being replaced and the detection upgraded you have no chance of it (come on guys, i despair of you "regestered" boy's who by default are born knowing all the rules - unlike me of course - even suggesting it, some just do not think first before typing ). jovial non-registered little (but very good) company 'dig' over, i agree you do need a decent engineer to have a good look at your system, but to save some time and so money, record when it trips any indications given, as this is of great assistance to a decent service engineer's diagnostics. chances are your standby battery will need replacing and hopefully thats all that is needed, but the visiting engineer will test to see if your system operates and performs with designed parameters (and we don't need to be NSI or SSAIB to do that either ) and advise on any upgrades without obligation. regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!! Guest Dave the alarm man
and advise on any upgrades without obligation. before spending any wonga on upgrading system its best to check whether firm & grading meets with your insurers requirements (if they have any)

amateurandy
er i believe it was AMATEURandy who came up with that gem lol To be honest I've no idea what Arfur was saying, it didn't occur to me it referred to anything I said, all of which was totally harmless. So what "gem" are we referring to? Arfur were you referring to me saying "(and monitoring if it's capable and you want it)"? Because that was just an aside and indicating an option that WOULD NEED TO BE VERIFIED. I'm lost.............. (or is it just Angus with his big wooden spoon? )
