I know you may find this hard to believe as you are from up North, but parking in London is so expensive they now have parking machines that accept credit cards and the latest way of paying is by text. Once you have logged all your details with which ever council is in charge of the parking in that area and once you have found a parking space you then text them and they debit your card for the parking. Average NCP charge for a day's parking in the West End is about

not used the text service yet as when i tried it would not accept my switch card?,

but got to admit i do like the credit card taking parking machines, as no more time wasted buying a mars bar with

today i started my work just off Fleet street then progressed to regent street. anyone else used the text to use parking meters? 13 quid 20 pence for 2 hours, cant complain but anyone know if its instant?

I had to pay 50 pence for 2 hours parking smack bang in the centre of Bangkok the other day. When my wife told me she had forgot to get the ticket stamped otherwise it would have been free - I was not a happy chap.
