Helmi Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Hi folks, I'll be installing a Premiere 48 in my home during the next few weeks and I need to get communications issues resolved. Of course I'd like to use Wintex to upload to the panel. My home office PC is located in a room that is one story below the location of the panel. The cable-length distance is around 10 metres from panel to PC. Can I extend the cable on the PC Com to cover this distance and plug into the office PC? Or do I need to use a laptop (that I don't have), or network using the (expensive) COMIP unit? I'm grateful for any advice. Many thanks in advance, Helmi
aptsys Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 if you use the RS232 version, then you can easily extend or buy an RS232 extension lead. If you use the USB version you need active extenders or temporarily move your PC closer.
breff Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 If using rs232 you can just extend the cable between the pccom and the db9 plug with a bit of alarm cable, Texecom say NOT to alter the length of cable between the pcom and the panel. The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct! (Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)
Guest Dave the alarm man Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 I wonder what effect a short on the com port will have on a set system?
BestGear Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 I have used CAT5 to extend the serial cable - cat5 was used as it was patched through to existing wall port. Run length - without TDR'ing it, would guess 15 meters. Runs fine. I would watch tho if you intend leaving a PC connected 24/7, as some PC's when they reboot, cause a tamper fault on the panel.... DJ
