arfur mo Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Hi LED, tbh if you thinking of going into alarms as a business your simply inviting poverty, might look lucrative at first but today there just is not the mark up in it for a serious business, so take my advice and get into telecoms or networking even CCTv for far better returns, the physical side of the work is much the same and you get to play with all sorts of kit too. regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!

Very true, I'm in IT and given the prices I see quoted for alarms struggle to see how you can make a decent living whilst doing a good job. On the other hand computers are pretty complex things that change rapidly so just keeping up with the technology takes a significant amount of your time (and money). With all the usual business admin work to do as well you'd be lucky to spend 50% of your working hours actually commited to a client (working for or travelling to/from).

Mavrick_001 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 LED, yuor probabally getting knocked as we get alot of it people coming on here telling us we're basically at the bottom of the heap, there in it and know everything and then turn around and say how do you do this..... also sparks come on here asking alot of dumb questions and alot of sparkes job out there are some of the worst alarms you could come across and plagued with faults. I started of life as an electrical apprentice on a tight ass CCTV Intruder Access Control Tony Hughes, Proprietor, TRADE MEMBER
Guest Dave the alarm man Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 On the other hand computers are pretty complex things well yes & no, now hand on heart I could not deploy the firms server fully , I could not get the dns to work proper I got my tame IT man in to finsh, now my "tame IT" is a contact from a large local company I've seen their dept add to an existing cctv install, I would pass coment where it not for the BWF.... Strangely I don't turn up in a server forum expressing my opinion..... however should you ever get involved with a proper commerical intruder maybe using just 1/3 of its potential maybe a couple of wards & a simple door access you may find its different kettle of fish to fitting an optima in a house With all the usual business admin work to do as well you'd be lucky to spend 50% of your working hours actually commited to a client (working for or travelling to/from). what kills intruder alarms is the sheer about of admin required to be a proper company, even the liability insurance is 5 times as much as say a sparkies, that before we start buying a standard thats worthless in 6 month....... of the top of my head in 7K+ before staff,vans/cars, buildings & other bills.
amateurandy Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 well yes & no, There's nothing like a selective misquote is there The important point I was making re computers (and no comment or criticism whatsoever of big commercial alarms) was the rate of change and the time you need to invest keeping up. Just like installing a simple DIY home alarm doesn't relate to a big commercial one, then looking after home PC's doesn't relate to big commercial IT networks (the biggest I ran connected over 60 offices in 30 countries).

amateurandy Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Stick to the original topic please. It went off topic in post #3 and never once went back. No sign of the OP after post #1 unfortunately. Might as well close it, or let it carry on as a new debate which is after all quite interesting?
