If you want the police to respond to an activation from a digi/redcare via the ARC then you have to get from the police a URN (unique reference number). They will not issue a number unless you are registered with a regulatory body. For any kind of above average risk insurers will want police response. For further details ask the alarms section of your local police force HQ to send you a copy of their police force policy.

Currently NSI (nacoss/icon) and the SSAIB are the only regulatory bodies that are acceptable to the police.

If you stay unregulated you will only be able to install audible systems and remote signalling systems that call out the private key holder. This means the domestic end of the market where everyone is after a slice of the cake, whilst you will earn a living whilst the work is there you will not grow your business. If your customers have to upgrade you will probably lose them to another.

The European standards, when they arrive, will probably make things even more difficult. I would recommend that you come to an arrangement with another lone installer regarding 24 hour cover as soon as possible, go for the SSAIB it is currently the least expensive and easier option but in the long term Nacoss for the commercial work.

Remember one day you may want to sell your business and retire to Weston! so build your business on a good foundation. It is the maintenance contracts in the long run that gives your business any value, make sure you have written maintenance contracts with your customers and install your systems so that they meet the current standards (e.g. DD243).

Good Luck

Mico
