54321jpb Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Hi Many thanks for reading this query and in anticipation of any replies! I've just joined this forum and this is my first post. Have searched for similar problems to mine but nothing exactly matches. My Scantronic 9448 system was installed by a previous owner of the property. Just recently I had a power cut, in the confusion I didn't get to the alarm very quickly but later spotted that the outside alarm light was flashing. I tried entering the access code but the light wouldn't stop. After about 5 hours electricity was restored and the control unit starting to make a very peculiar and quite loud buzzing noise (like a very fast Geiger counter!). It still would not respond to any keypresses. At the moment, as well as the control unit buzzing, the green power light is on but the control unit buttons fail to respond at all. I suspect that the backup battery may be knackered but surely when power was restored I should be able to use the control panel? So maybe the control unit is knackered too? Is there anything I can try or do I need a callout engineer? , John (Lisburn, N.I.)
topalarms Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 The battery was probably dead and the power cut has resulted in a corruption of the processor. May just need a hard reset or a panel replacement - call a local engineer.
FASTCAR Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Hi , Remove the mains fuse , open the main panel , then disconnect one lead to the battery.Carefully put the mains fuse back in , and the alarm should come back to life (enter your code to silence), reconnect the battery , close the panel and reset. If the system is over 5 years old , get it serviced and a new battery fitted. Regards.
54321jpb Posted January 5, 2008 Author Posted January 5, 2008 Thanks for fast responses. To do a reset I need to disconnect the battery. The manual I have doesn't show the battery connections. Are they easy to find when I open up the control panel? The manual mentions a 2 Amp anti surge fuse for the battery, is this inside the control panel? Maybe I can remove this to disconnect battery power? Thanks again, John
FASTCAR Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Hi , The battery has spade terminals that just pull off. Be aware the battery could fall out as you open the panel. If you are not confident around electrics ...then please get an engineer to sort it for you. Regards.
Guest anguscanplay Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 check the front of the panel with the back of your hand - is it very warm (as opposed to just warm), it`s better to have no battery in there rather than a dead, stuffed (technical term ) one over cooking the power supply
54321jpb Posted January 5, 2008 Author Posted January 5, 2008 It's just "ordinary warm", but I've decided to replace the battery anyway. Thanks.
arfur mo Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 check the front of the panel with the back of your hand - is it very warm (as opposed to just warm), it`s better to have no battery in there rather than a dead, stuffed (technical term ) one over cooking the power supply would that be with an officially 'calibrated' and certificated back of the hand ? above is a goood rudimentary test, but if you panel happens to be in the airing cupbaord (OMG!) it will likely be warm anyway and such locations tend to shorten battery life. if not serviced in the last 2 years get it done by a competent engineer, you got it free so spend a bit of tlc cash on it - you know it makes sense regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
