dogtag Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Hi All. advice needed please. Can i run a cat 5 cable to carry video, (balun at each end), Data (PTZ control), and audio, cameras powerd locally. Without using any special adaptors or magic boxes other than the baluns. and what kind of audio device are the audio cables connected to at the dvr end. Speaker ? amp ?? PTZ is controlled by DVR only. Thanks for any tips. NJ

NJ hi dogtag, for voice you need screened cable so if using CAT5e it would have to be STP (shelded twisted pair) this would reduce the transmitting distance. of the baluns i've seen they only have a power take of, this type might be used (i only think ok) for the data (as you don't need power) but your then stuffed for the mic unless to cut in before the plugs. tbh i've not yet had enough confidence or persuasion in cat5e for camera's, and i install networks. i find i worry if it's over a long distance and it don't work, theres a risk of a lot of labour and so loss in then running coax. i also know coax will work, and conversely if a short distance i feel it's not worth the cost of the baluns or the faffing around fitting the plugs, so i'm in a bit of a 'doubt loop' if you like . regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
breff Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Video, data and audio can be sent down a single cat5 cable up to 1km. If you are in the trade look at systemq. usually you would output the dvr's phono audio into an amp or direct into a monitor that has audio. The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct! (Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

Is it just a connection unit or does it perform magic tricks. Most of the gear we use is from SysQ.
breff Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Might work, but why bother, when you see the price of these you might as well do it properly. The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct! (Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

SystemQ Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 for that Breff, yes i have seen this magic box, my queston really was would the audio and data still transmit without using this unit. Is it just a connection unit or does it perform magic tricks. Most of the gear we use is from SysQ. The RS485 data (PTZ control) passes through the balun without any amplification. This is because it should travel down CAT5 a good kilometre without issue. So the data terminals are just a System Q Ltd.

I install several Mini Specta's and a Spectra IV last week over UTP passive as part of the camera and an active in the rack. (I was surprised to find the Pelco UTP connections in the cameras worked with the Genie Balums.) Telemetry was over RS485 with no problems. As I said before this was without audio. (cable runs ran from 200 tp 400 meters) Richard

col70 Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 hi if the run is not that long you are better running them all seperatly with the correct cable as there will be less to go wrong in the future and thats where you need to be looking as if you have to go back to sort things out then its going to cost you money. reg col
