hi jigz,

some principle's 1st

the more modern SAB = Self Activating Bell - operates by being driven from the panel rail voltage inalarm, has a rechargeable battery that acts as a standby to ensure it rings if the alarm panel is ripped off the wall.

old style (prehistoric) SCB = Self Contained Bell - operation is by removing the voltage so it runs on the internal bell battery. like an SAB inbackup mode if you like.

there are a few more exotic options, like Gardtecs Nova Siren, these are controlled by data signals so much much harder to overcome and have diagnostics for charging off charge and so on.

some SAB's run on a Negative drive , others on a Positive drive to 'ring', most generic sirens can accomodate both options as can many panels.

it makes no real difference, as long as you have both siren and bell set to the same 'drive' option.

A lot of engineers struggle with SAB's - so you're not on your own. The way I always tried to remember it was that the thing needs a 12v supply - just like a PIR or many other devices. This is sometimes referred to as a positive and negative hold off and is usually marked with a + and - (or 12v and 0v). I always used to use the red and black cables.

Next, the SAB will normally have a negative trigger. Connect this to the Bell -ve trigger in the panel. Blue was always my colour for this.

Lastly, the one that throws everyone is the tamper return ( what - just one wire ?????). Well, as almost all engineers are expecting everything except power to be a loop, perhaps the best way to think of the tamper return is that it should be a loop with the OV supply to the SAB. That is, if you connect up the SAB, put on the cover and the tamper switch is closed, there should be a loop between OV and tamper return. If the tamper switch is opened, the loop goes open circuit, the tamper return terminal on the panel loses its negative and a bell tamper occurs. Yellow was my colour for this.

That just leaves the easiest one - the strobe. All done.

I always used the same colour coding so that whenever any less experienced engineers went there after me it was easy for them to understand the wiring as it was consistent throughout the company. It's interesting that a guy I used to sub contract for would insist on using a different set of colours for each job. He said it was to make it difficult for intruders to figure out the wiring and also to confuse engineers from other companies and put them off taking over the job. :( Weird.
