But you can install if you are electrically qualified but you would need a reputable fire company to come in and certificate the system to make sure that it confirms to BS 5839 That is the short answer but someone else may add the full reasoning. Guest G.J.M Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 you are required to prove your competance in the relevant areas i.e install, design etc You can only do this by gaining third party qualifications by attending training courses. Although this never seems to stop anyone installing fire alarms......sparkies.... you may think that you are very capable and you maybe are but most who think this do it all wrong . doubt very much if they are even aware of 5839-1. unless you have been fully trained to 5839-1 then you are not fully capable

Justin Roberts Posted March 24, 2008 Author Posted March 24, 2008 Well thanks for the comment chaps. I did think you would need to have some sort of qualification. I do have a clue have been servicing fire alarms and installing fire alarms for 1 of the biggest security companys now in the uk. Because of a merge of these 2 major companys i have questioned my role and have decided to go self employed. I am just trying to get more info about wot work i will be able to do straight away. I am fully qualified for intruder and cctv and have a fair few BTECs in these fields but nuthin in fire. Looks like i may have to take another trip to my traing provider haha

If you have been doing some fire then it should be a case of putting what you know into context with what the standards say.
