Guest ANT Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 where do i go and what do i need to become a security installer? i have just fitted an accenta system to my house one at my sisters and one at my sister in-laws and im really enjoying it i have got all my tools and testers now i want to see what is available in the way of training. do i need to be qualified? i think the sytems i have fitted comply with BS but i have no electrical training and i have connected them to the mains myself - not directly to the consumer unit but on a fused spur from a socket. im in the stockport/manchester area can anyone point me in the right direction thanks in advance! this site has been a great help im my new found skill ant
Guest dale Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 First thing I would do Ant, is register with the site, then we can send you messages and communicate with you better. Also you will be able to see much more than you will as a guest! There is already some posts detailing where training can be sourced so use the search feature and have a quick browse. I think the best thing you can do is become an apprentice for a company, that way you get much more hands on experience. Dale
Guest ANT Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 mate registering in a minute and will have a good luck at whats on offer i would still be working full time so i will look for evening/weekend courses the apprentice route would be a no go - still got a mortgage to pay! although if sombody needs weekend help - thats a thought!
Guest dale Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 I know there are night courses for IEE 16th edition wiring regulations, but I dont know of any evening or weekend courses for security engineers. Best thing to do is check your local technical college. Dale
Guest ant Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 been searching on tinternet for anything that resembles an instalation course. i found a grand total of 0 courses!!! is there a secret place for alarm bods? maybe there is this alarm guru and only the chosen ones can have the knowledge? how many alarms do i need to install before i can look at changing career? how many books do i need to read? sorry it friday and i want to go home
Security Technician Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 i think there are a couple of places in st helens and wigan area that i got sent to when i was training, 1 is act meters, they do all sorts of short 1 and 2 day courses from basic fused spur installation and electrical safety to fault finding etc the other place i went to was tk consultants in wigan, this wasa basic installation course wiring panels etc up then i believe they do advanced courses also. I also went to leeds college on a night but obviously its a bit far for you. Dont know if this was of any help Andy

gooner31 Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 i have only been in this industry for 4 yrs and when i started i didnt have any qualifications and to put it bluntly i had no idea.i started with //.National Installer.// thames valley branch and just learnt as i went along after a couple of months i went out on my own doing maintenances slowly progressing onto fault calls. four yrs later im still in the industry and thourghly enjoying it. my advice to you ant is ring around a few local or if you want a few of the bigger companies and ask them if they are employing people at the moment its worth a try you might get that employment break you are looking for. pete pete ................. Any comments/opinions posted are my own and not that of my employers.
