lawandorder Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Hi chaps, I am looking to get back in to the security industry after working for several years in IT. I have over 20 years experience gained with national companies working with Galaxy, Scantronic, Menvier etc. (along with lots of domestic stuff, Texecom, ADE etc) Also lots of CCTV, Fire and Access experience. I have a full driving licence and 16th edition. What is the security market like at the moment, what type of salary could I expect and how often do service engineer vacancies come up in the Lincolnshire/East Yorkshire region. Any advice regarding employment advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

barooga Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I'd not overly worry about the intruder but the IT skills will prove very useful and could help enhance the package. Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional

I hope so, money isn't everything but it would be nice to get back into the alarm/CCTV/Access industry without taking a pay cut. I emailed a guy today who used to be the service manager for one of the companies I have worked for, apparently they have a vacancy which they are about to advertise so he's calling me about it next week. It will be interesting to see what the package is like, they are a pretty large national with more than three letters in the name! Thanks again for all the replies, I have been out of the industry for several years (apart from the odd domestic for family and freinds) so a bit out of touch and unclear as to what impact IT and networking over IP has had on the industry. Hopefully my IT experience will come in handy, I used to program Menvier TS2500 and TS900 via a laptop in the late 90s but apart from that IT hadn't really made great inroads into intruder.
Guest Cerberus NI Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 It also depends on what grade you went out at - again, with the IT skills you may be better suited to going into the disciplines which can be more computer based than intruder (fire for example - get yourself acquanted with the old logic programming (as well as getting a few 5839 courses under your belt) then you may be able to get into the higher base salary bracket. You should be able to negotiate a good base salary if you can talk the talk to a good independant (if you can find such a thing - by that I mean an independant!).

Thanks for that, I hadn't really thought too much about fire even though I have done my share of that as well. Most of the companies I have worked for did fire to some extent but it was fairly limited with some of the larger ones having a specialist fire division. I was very familiar with BS5839 but I understand that it has been changed recently so I would need to get up to speed on that. I'm not really sure what grade I went out on, I work continuously in the alarm industry from 1980 until 2003 and lived and breathed security. Your advice re: fire is fantastic, I will certainly look into it, can you suggest any specialist recruitment sites?

If you were familiar with 1988 then it's about adjustment more than anything - I'd recommend the courses run by FIA (which is the merge of BFPSA and FETA) which are modular ( Click Here!!). CCTV might be an option also with most systems now running via PC's/DVR's. With 20 years experience I'd like to think that you were worth more than a maintenance rate.
