marksandsparks Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 This morning at 3.30am I was woken by the sound of our external alarm sounder , the internal was not sounding. It sounded for a minute or so and during this time it was as if someone was holding the 12v cable on the connection point but not very steadily if you can imagine the noise that would make with the crackle before going into full sound. Anyway this happened a few times over the next 5 minutes. The RKP didn't show any any activations or tamper faults and showed that it was set correctly. I did unset the alarm anyway and still the problem persisted with the RKP denying any alarm. In the end I had to go up a ladder and disconnect the alarm completely. So here are some facts, that may or may not be relevant. The Texecom Veritas R8+ alarm has been installed for just over 2 years. It has an ACT Spike Suppressor fitted. Nothing like this has ever happened in the past. The external sounder is an ADE Reson8. Yesterday I was in the loft and found that the previous owner had wired a socket into a lighting circuit. The cables were still required as part of the circuit so I replaced the socket with a junction box. This is within a few inches of some of the alarm cables but in the same place as the socket was and I am 100% confident that I didn't damage any of these cables. This junction box is at the other end of the loft from the external sounder box and cable route so I know that I haven't damaged that cable in any way. So could it be interference from mains cables, but why then did the control panel not activate? Could it be a faulty alarm box or control panel? Any suggestions would be most welcome to get to the bottom of this.
kka Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 first test the system . walk test bell test strobe test etc etc. this may point to the problem let us know more after that and we can try and pin down the problem Kevin Scott. arfur mo Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 1st impressions are either a cable fault to the bell caused by perhaps mice or recent carpets being laid, most likely the positive 'hold of' line, as if negative it would usually trip the panels tamper. but there lies a story, i'm are assuming the bell tamper is wired correctly, but is it wired in at all? after that seems either the bell has a fault or the panel has one or both. regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
marksandsparks Posted April 25, 2008 Author Posted April 25, 2008 As I said the bell isn't connected at the moment but the alarm system is working fine, walk - test OK and alarm triggers internal sounder and communicator when I activate a sensor. I can't do a bell test at the moment because it goes into the fault if power is connected back up. The bell should be wired up correctly because I got advice from this forum on that when installing it. As for it activating the tamper this should surely show up on the RKP and I know that it used to if I opened the sounder lid. The cable for the external sounder goes from the control panel through the loft directly to the sounder and I've made a physical check to ensure that it hasn't been damaged by rodents etc. It has me completely stumped. Is there anything I need to check with my multimeter to narrow things down?
kka Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 you need to check the cable with a meter, visual inspections can sometimes miss a cable break inside the sheath......or you could just replace the wire with a new piece and that eliminates that......check the ouput on the bell and the strobe at the panel, during an alarm to see if the panel is putting out the correct voltage.
