steven sneddon Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Callout to a nursing home (2 mins from house) jsb firedex 8 zone conventional. they have had a few false alarms zone 1 is in fault, moved eol to panel, panel healthy move eol back to mcp zone fault test continuity by shorting zone at mcp fine, tested all detection on zone 1 chart 30% not on zone 1 tested a couple of devices on other zones they are wrong as well. Also tested detector that staff say was in alarm goes into fire and resets ok. Everything on system works fine although doesn't conform to zone chart still has zone fault. Was called in by local sparky as he has being looking after this site was only given 1 hour only, actually went to it as I share a unit with him (cupboard), told him it wasnt enough time to investigate system wiring. Have recommended they get a comprehensive fire risk assesment carried out (gave them relevant number to call) and change panel to analogue addressable(happilly give them a quote) linking out the zones at eols and panel also costing for any wiring faults. have already sent email to spark explaining how important that something is done straight away. Undrlining the fact care commision scotland would probably take away license if this wasnt fixed. Think I have done all I can in allowed time anyone any input would be appreciated. We are subbies so this isnt our usual remit! Regards Steven Sneddon

If you ever find a fault on a fire alarm, put it in writing and make the manager/responsible person sign for it, put it in the site fire log book, everything else is down to them. BTW I used to rob the EOL from an unused zone if there was one when this happens, as said above JSB active EOL's are **** and I carried spares as well! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Life is like a box of chocolates, some bugger always gets the nice ones! Guest Cerberus NI Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Cerb i dont understand you mate?Seems like if a client wont pay for the time required... how can you put anything else? I'm not disputing that - my point was that either the customer or the sparky doesn't get the implication of poor fire alarm maintenance and inoperative systems.Too many of a particular typr of sparky treat fire alarm maintenance like PAT testing and are facilitated by customers trying to go for the cheapest option - not much of an option when there place goes up in smoke due to short cuts on fire alarm maintenance The problem with a fire alarm system is that it is generally "dormant" and sits there on the wall with only a green light - aside from the weekly test (yeah, right!) there is no daily interaction with the system (unlike intruder,CCTV or access).
L200 Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Its the same old story , obviously Steve and his sparky mate knows how to run a nursing home , just as these owners know about fire systems. I have had the misfortune of dealing with 'clients' like this. I would write to them officially and raise your concerns , you don't want to be dealing with this type of person. You will be wasting oxygen. You guys obviously are taking it seriously but the other party is not , I would let them get on with it , and give them a dose of looking through the yellow pages, or on line at 2 am in the morning when it all goes t**ts up. They are ultimately responsible , once you have advised your findings 'under a duty of care' , its the old saying 'you can take a horse to water , but you cant make it drink' Do you need all this aggro , the answer is no.
