Scantronic 602 And Working On The Ringmain

I have recently moved house and have a Scantronic 602 alarm with remote keypad that was installed by the previous occupants. They have left me all the paperwork they had and I know the code etc.

A few months ago I had someone in to re wire the kitchen and the only thing I noticed about the alarm was the red light flashing on the keypad which I assumed at the time was when it was running of battery while they had the power off. It stopped soon after so I thought nothing more.

I have not actually used the alarm since we moved in but know it works (I have set it off to check).

Today I decided that I wanted to switch off the ring main so I could change a socket but as soon as I pull the ring main fuse, the alarm sounds. It stops as soon as I put the fuse back in.

I have read all the paperwork I have but can't see how to stop this happening. I assumed that when the alarm was not set, if the power went it would just go to battery.

Can any one tell me what I should be doing - I really don't want to have to call an engineer out to do something that must be very simple!

Thanks

John

It sounds as though the battery is dead and needs replacement - you could do it but if you do ensure that the mains power is isolated befor you remove the panel cover.

If the battery is dead it probably means that the system hasn't been serviced in a while and so my recommendation would be to call in a local engineer to check the system over, service it and change the battery - it makes sense to do this.

QFA, i good service is worth its money and will give you cover for 12 months should You choose that option.

Thanks both of you. I was starting to come round to that idea. I will check to see when it was last serviced anyway.

If I did decide to replace the battery myself, you mention isolating the mains - I assume that I would have to change it over with the bell ringing then?

Also (forgive me if I sound stupid) but if the battery needs replacing, what is powering the bell when I pull the fuse out?

Yes, noise is better than a nasty shock!

The ni-cad battery in the bellbox.
