mrtester Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 This alarm my sister has has been in some years but doesn't drive many zones as only a small terrace house. It suddenly goes into alarm mode when unset. and sometimes when set too. On entering the code the tamper led flashes until reset. I don't think it has ever had a service or attention but was fitted by a pro. Any ideas I can look at for her please? She only has user instructions but I will look on line for a manual. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Bill

mrtester Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 carpet fitters, mice, battery, bellbox usually Ah, really. The easiest one out of that list is the battery I suppose. I do some spares so I will swap that first. She has a cat so not a guarantee against mice but will deter. How can I check out the bell box from terra firma or is a ladders job the only way?? I could test sounder and strobe from the panel but can I test the sab/tamper from there? Thanks for fast ideas.

To be honest, and I'm really not trying to put you off from having a go yourself, it could be any number of things including any of the ones already mentioned. Just trying things at random may solve the problem but there is no substitute for a good test meter and a good understanding of the things you are testing. You really need to test the resistance of all the tamper wiring but it is true to say that many tamper faults are bell box related because obviously this is exposed to the elements.

Yep, I realise that. Just that my sis is not having it easy right now and the expense of an alarm tech won't help her. I am electronics engineer in lift control systems so well qualified to llook at an alarm, just don't have a lot of time to get to grips with it. I will do a few checks and if all fails will rip it out and stick a new one in! I found a manual on line and see there is a routine to omit the global tamper to temp stop the nuisence triggers so will do that right now. for all help on here. Apprieciated.

Don't replace it just yet! Chances are the fault is on the wiring so you still won't neccasarily fix it by replacing things! You should be able to fix it yourself if you are in to electronics, basically you are looking for low resistance on the global tamper circuit and a negative return from the bell box. Measure and record both then have a poke around with the wiring and see if readings change.
james.wilson Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 forgive me here I am electronics engineer in lift control systems so well qualified to llook at an alarm, i know naff all about lifts but so am i... can i have a go on a lift? securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
Chorlton Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 I am electronics engineer in lift control systems so well qualified to llook at an alarm not really the best way to make us feel wanted is it mate? appreciate we specialise in what we do (as you do) and assume nothing is easy until you know how. you will get FREE advice but please listen to the guys that do it 9-5 as a career and take their advice in good faith. .
mrtester Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 forgive me herei know naff all about lifts but so am i... can i have a go on a lift? Lifts just go up and down and open and close. Not rocket science really. The thing we all have in common is knowledge of electronics. Just different applications.
james.wilson Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 lol ok ill remeber that mrtester. Yeah i could make one work but there would be all the bits your training and expereice gives you i would not have. There is a difference to 'it working' as far as you think it should and it being right. Anyway good luck and yes they are basidally cicuits just dont disable something that you dont think you need.
