Deltaseven Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 I have a triple-layer extension ladder, and have damaged one of the guides (the metal clamp at the top of the middle layer, which holds the top layer to the middle layer). As a result, if I extend the top section, the ladder twists, and is patently unsafe. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement clamp? Our supplier of ladders has advised that we will need to purchase the entire middle section to get this guide (even though it just bolts on), but I think that is a bit extreme. Thanks in advance, D7
bellman Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 Hi D7, The only manufacturing ladder people i know of are Hulleys in sheffield. Their web site can be found Here They have given excellent service to me and several fellow engineers over the last 12 years or so. and i'd be supprised if they can't help you. CompostCORNER Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 Theres actually people that specialise in ladder repairs? In all honesty, if my ladders become damaged, it's always a replacement for me. I don't think I could ever trust a repair. At the end of the day, It's my life the repair has to safeguard. I think I'd always be weary about a repair. I live by the rule 'look after your ladders and they will look after you'. Sounds silly but for the sake of a couple of hundred pounds for a new set, I'd sooner be safe. Tony
gooner31 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 i have to agree with compost on this one i broke my leg 4 yrs ago because of faulty ladders.they were almost new and got passed down to me when someone left. would rather spend a couple of hundred quid and know im gonna be safe on them rather than go through all that pain again . pete pete ................. Any comments/opinions posted are my own and not that of my employers.
bellman Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 Hi Tony, Hulleys are ladder manufacturers, in fact the only manufacturer i know of. They have repaired several sets of ladders for me over the years, (daft little things like missing end stops, broken clamps and the like). all their work is done to the relevent British Standards and they are extremely knowledgeable, (having been in the ladder business a very long time). They were originally recommended to me by a fellow engineer when I was an apprentice and i've always found them prompt courtious and efficient. as for replacement rather than repair, I aggree with you that our safety depends on the equipment we use being up to scratch, and it's important that any damage is rectified as soon as possible, but minor problems shouldn't necitate a complete replacement. that would be like saying because an alarm had a faulty pir you should replace the entire system. but at the end of the day, I suppose it's individual choice. I wouldn't do any repairs to them myself. even if i had the appropriate spare parts, primeraly for safety concerns, as I havn't been trained in the repair of ladders, I'll leave that up to hulley's... Just my views Regards Bellman Service Engineer and all round nice bloke ) The views above are mine and NOT those of my employer.
norman Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 If it's only a clamp I wouldn't hesitate in the repair but anything like a buckle etc I'd have second thought's (that's assuming they would offer to repair!) Just my opinion Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
Deltaseven Posted May 30, 2004 Author Posted May 30, 2004 Thanks all for your views - I quite agree that safety is the primary concern, but replacing the whole ladder set seems very extreme - I even thought that replacing just the middle section (as recommended by our supplier) was extreme! After all, it is just a bolt on guide - nothing fancy or complicated to replace! D7
