i had a G816 'smoke' a keypad pcb, a bit of a trickey fault to suss,

How long did it take to find your fault on keypad Arf?

Watch out cos Angus will be paying attention!!

LOL - you git.

thing is the cable was run high over offices and across the works, just like Arfur claimed would be the only reason it could take him so long to find the cause ............. he`s a mind reader?

 did make me scratch my chin as not a fault i'd had before.

back to 'old school' fault finding, diss off all wiring except rkp and zones, remmember the keypad is on a comms line so no option but to risk another keypad, fortunately had one with a damaged casing from a repair, to see if the panel was causing it.

1st insert meter on current inline with the battery amd vie an inline fuse for safety and turn off the mains. very carefully reconnected one cable at a time until i got an abnormlal increase in urrent on the meter, found it was on the expander lines so it was a fairly simple matter of tracing using our best ever servicing weapons - close observation and applied logic.

immediate thoughts unlikely to be an expander was at fault, odds on a shorted cable feeding the expanders, i openned the middle expander (using the cut circuit in half tracing approach) spotted that some pirs 12 volt feeds were connected in the expander 12 volts (to the wrong place) so dissed them off in all the expanders, one cable was plummer damaged under the boards on the last one.

as the instal was technically connected wrong (see manual), i only charged a nominal maintenance fee, but not for the replacement keypad - the system was 2 years old at the time - and one reason why i stopped employing others to do the job for me :realmad: .

admit, i was a bit slower than usual that day due to a touch of flu, but say 10 minutes from openning the panel? if you don't include rummaging about for the old 'test' rkp in the darkest depths of my chariot - aka i know its somewhere in here :fear: .
