JediKnight Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 We have an alarm system called AD Optima compact. It was in our house when we moved in. Yesterday, I attempted to fit some wooden flooring in our bedroom and needed to prise up the alarm wire (that was tacked down) and move it to the edge of the skirting board. However, as I put my screwdriver under the metal tack and raised it, the alarm went off. It went off for about 15 mins in which time I removed the plastic cover on the wire to see if I had cut it by accident. Inside are about another 6 smaller wires (white, yellow, red, green, blue, black). Suddenly the alarm stopped and I thought all was now well (I tried entering the code followed by the reset button whilst it was going off but it refused to stop ringing). Now, when I try to set the alarm, it continually gives 3 beeps, until I re-enter the code to stop it, so the normal working of the alarm has stopped. Is there another way to reset it after the initial problem ? Could it be that one of the 6 small wires is still faulty ? Which wire is it likely to be ?

Which wire is it likely to be ? you can only "re-set" once a fault is fixed. which core is damaged, how could we know? if you can't fix it you need on-site assistance. sorry, C.
hpotter Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Assuming all six wires are intact ie none broken, then I would guess two were shorted and youve blown a fuse.
JediKnight Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 Hello, Thanks for replying. I can't tell which of the wires has been broken, although the white and yellow wires have a slight dent in them. Rather than cutting all the wires and splicing them together, i wondered what significance the 6 wires have. Would a break in any of the 6 wires cause the alarm to trigger or would it need to be a specific one ? If I knew this, I could cut/splice together the likely contender(s). I have just noticed that none of the sensors are working (I can't see the little red light in the sensors). Thanks.
kensplace Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 There is no standard for alarm wiring, a installer could have used any of the cores for any function. Different alarms also have different means of detecting faults etc. Different installs use cables for different purposes, some may double up on the wires, some may have more than one detector per core, some may have extenders to allow many detectors of one cable. There is more than one method for detecting faults/tampers, again different panels, or even different settings on the panel could affect it. There is no way to say without a engineer visiting your premises and having access to your alarm system.
black knight Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Most likely when you removed the staple you accidently shorted the power (12volts) wiring which will have blown a fuse within the main box. As there is 240v mains present i would advise you not access that box yourself but get a aalrm engineer in to check it - and at the same time give your system a good check over. JediKnight Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 OK thanks again. Looks like I will need to call out an engineer then.
