camullins Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 thanks shinfieldmonkey, there is only 4 cameras', going by my home system test it will be an SQ alien as a replacement, very impressive bit of kit imo. their tech help to get it on DNSS and given i'm a complete networking numpty, was patient, prompt superb. i'm using a mda touch diamond phone (another great bit of kit guys), the images are just amazing quality on it, you can only view and operate the ptz on the phone and he delay from a person being viewd on the camera to apearing on the phone is about 25-30 seconds. regs alan many thanks djrock, did think possibly DynDNS.org would have a solution, i've contacted the client saying there are various ways, now waiting for him to come back. so not counting chickens etc etc regs alan You can always just put a password on Internet explorer. This would allow access to the Internet for the people with the password. TeleEye would be the way to go in my eyes. I have used the Video Recording Servers with great results. TeleEye RX units They have there own version of dyndns which updates every 15min. You can also send alarms to a monitoring station as long as it's on a fixed IP. Also a big plus is they don't seal the box and you can change th HDD's very easily, also the software is on the machine not the HDD.
jackbuchan Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Also another suggestion may be to restrict on the pc internet explorer from loading up on the machine. However it may be best not to show anyone when your doing this as they might try and re enable it to run if there memory is good and they watch everything your doing !. First of all go to : Start> Run then type gpedit.msc this it the group policy for the computer (restrictions that can be set up!) Under User Configuration go to the Heading administrative Templates then select system then it should show a list on the right hand side the one you are looking for is dont run specific windows applications (double click this) then select enable then press show it will bring up another window click add and type in iexplore.exe then say ok now if you apply this and try to open internet explorer you will get a message saying it is restricted for added security you can remove icons on start menu and desktop. That should be you now you can give urself a pat on the back for restricting internet explorer from opening up. However if you want to allow this you just follow the same steps as above apart from once you press show dont add you select the program you want to remove and click remove ! If you have any questions feel free to ask me ! Kind Regards, Jack Buchan JDB Solutions Web: www.jdbsolutions.co.uk E-Mail: jack@jdbsolutions.co.uk
sjonley Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Alan Everybody is quick to suggest the best router, DVR, remote transmission device etc... but what they fail to answer the most cost effective solution to stopping internet access out of the site. If the site has no internet access as suggested, then do the staff need to have internet access at all. You need to treat this application as with any other security system, keep the CCTV TOTALLY separate from any existing networks ie. upgrade an existing telephone connection such as a fax line, install a router specifically for the DVR and leave it at that. If internet access is required, then I would suggest a separate line and router probably installed by an IT company who can advise on virus threat risk and management. PM me if you need info on setting up the dvr and what ISP / router to use etc. regards Stuart Kind regards Stuart Onley SAMS Consultancy Independent Security Consultants email:enquiries@samsconsultancy.co.uk website:www.samsconsultancy.co.uk

He uses internet at home so is savey to some extent. his current view (which can change with the wind like all my clients)seems if if has the internet installed then he may as well use email for the day to day messages that are currently done by fax, he can pick them up on his phone and so on. i think he will go for it as long as i can button down the 'illigal' usage, reading between the lines, what he is concerned about most is staff perhaps getting onto a dodgy download site and file sharing music or even porn, then he cops a court case being ultimately responsible for the kit. we might saywell we could prove the actial person, but he is a very private type or charecter, would not wan't to risk any chance of being in the papers, even for soneone elses actions. the above is fairly typical of most the clients that use me, many bordering on eccentric. so my risk assessments don't just stop at the security, i have to risk assess any obscure reason they may feel they are at risk of. by 'pandering' to that and getting known to be being pre emptif for them, i've found you can pick up a awful lot of work even though they may be completely barking more than me half the time regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
sjonley Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Hi alan I'd still keep your side (ie security) totally seperate and stick to your guns about that. With regard to general internert usage, he needs to be looking at internet filter programs. I would suggest checking out the following link and allowing him to choose the best program for his internet usage. http://internet-filter-review.toptenreviews.com/ With regard to broadband packages, my personal favorite is the teleworker premium from http://www.plus.net. This gives you a static IP address as standard, good setup information and online tools but they also give 24/7 telephone support. A standard BT phone line is needed to be upgraded with plusnet. There are many ISP on the market but for a DVR scenario its the upload speed that counts, typically 449K in a standard uk broadband package irrespective of download speed. regards stuart Kind regards Stuart Onley SAMS Consultancy Independent Security Consultants email:enquiries@samsconsultancy.co.uk website:www.samsconsultancy.co.uk
