binbag Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 I need to keep my shop door locked until a customer comes to the door. I want to then press a button to release the door latch electronically. I presume i require a 12v supply, alarm cable, electronic latch, switch/button and some kind of relay? Can anyone recommend what I need and where best to get it? Thanks in advance.
Chorlton Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Is this to comply with the DDA? http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople...ghts/DG_4001068 C.
binbag Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 Not quite. Just for added security when someone is out the back or late at night.
Chorlton Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Not quite. Just for added security when someone is out the back or late at night. I'm confused then, sorry. How does pressing a button to open differ from turning a handle to open? Would a "chime" upon door opening be an idea? C.
binbag Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 The shop/office assistant would be behind a counter or out the back. By having a button located behind the counter the assistant does not have to get up from the desk, walk to the door and manually open the door.
kensplace Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 You would need a fail safe lock or latch so if power fails the door is left unlocked (so people dont get locked in if there is a fire etc). Probably would need a push to exit button at the door also, again for safety in case something happens to the shop assistant (unconcious, heart attack etc) so people in the shop could open the door either in case of fire or for emergency services etc. Either that, or the door needs to be able to be opened manually in a emergency. Basically, set up the system so no one can get trapped inside. You can get 12v yale type latch keeps that will work with a normal lock, they release or lock the keep so the door will open when power is applied to them, you can hook that up to your relay/switch. They come in fail safe and fail secure variants.
binbag Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 Thanks for that. What kind of relay do i need and where do I get one from?

daveboy Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Try RS components ask for a 12v non latching relay.
