Guest Guest_malcolm Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 Hi everyone the same old story i recently moved to a new house and adopted a c&k alarm with remote keyad. I have rewired the alarm adding extra detectors and tidied it up and all is working o.k. I am an electrical contractor. What i would like to know is how to program walk through zones e.t.c. to enable me rear access to my house and to alter the system to more suit my needs thank you for any information malcolm the sparks
Paul Giles Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 First things first, let the forum know which area you are in and an approved installer will be able to offer you a service contract and will fully test and programme the system, including setting it up to your requirements. I know you are probably thinking, well i am a sparks and i dont need a 'wet string' man telling me i need a new battery etc but trust me an alarm can become next to useless if it is not maintained and faults develop. We are also electrical contractors and it makes me cringe when sparkies mess with alarms, not all their fault either as professional electrician does its best to promote diy alarms. The thing to remember is that intruders are not stupid and we are finding that we are getting called to houses that have been broken into with bell boxes on. These are not boxes with registered firms logos on but the sort you find in diy stores or simply blank. You will not be able to receive a discount on your house insurance without a service contract in force and systems connected to a 24hr central station with police response HAVE to be serviced twice a year by law so you can see it is not just alarm companies making this up.. We have many friends why are sparks and have service contracts with us, we also install alarms for big electrical contractors. Imagine the scenario, 3am siren out of control, neighbours annoyed and you cant silence it, who are you going to call? Get into a service agreement and have the peace of mind that an engineer will attend within four hours anytime you call them. We are so often called out to sparky specials who beat us on the quote but half ten on a saturday night are not availible, we take the system over a put a sticker on the external box (after we have fixed it properly by removing the two, inch eights 'fixing' it to the wall ) and fixing at least four two inch tens! Sure you will agree this makes sense, let us know how you get on. Perhaps you could pick up some work from here fitting spurs for the alarms guys. Guest Guest_malcolm Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 Hi paul thanks for the reply i have put a lot of thought and effort into the redesigning of my alarm and it is installed far better than it was first installed by an alarm engineer for the previous owner there's no cables strung across the attic now and i take a lot of pride in my work .I am actually an electrical technician and have also completed courses in electronics e.t.c. all i need is programming info. The alarm as reinstalled by me is working 100% and has been used daily for a considerable time i thought this sight was where i could get the required info but obviously not from you malcolm
Paul Giles Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 Malcolm, sounds like you are very consciencious and neat, well done. please dont take offence at my post but i just feel its horses for courses, NICEIC, NSI, SSAIB dont exist for nothing Let each trade carry out their respective work, i admit some alarm installations by approved companies are rough but you will find that in any field as some of the electrical installations we inspect are the same and require bringing up to standard before the NICEIC cert can be issued. Advice should not be free as you and i didnt go to college for nothing. Paul PG Security Systems Somerset SSAIB Certificate of Merit Installers. www.pgsecurity.co.uk
Guest Guest_malcolm Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 Paul Perhaps i am mistaken but i thought the idea 0f a forum was to exchange information. If anyone asks me for information on electrical subjects i gladly give it to them after warning of the potential danger and would not dream of charging for it this is the first time i have been on this site and think i will be better of to ask an alarm engineer when im working on the construction site as im sure they wont want to charge me.As for your 1" eights Didnt get any in the panel they just laid it in the roof space. malcolm
Guest Peter James Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Hmm another one of these Malcolm this forum does give free help and advise just look around you will find circuit diagrams and alsorts. We are unable to give out engineer manuals due to a legal threat from a manufacture, (I agree with this manufacture (personal opinion) how can we tell who people are on a public forum?) This industry has suffered alot just recently i.e. new Police policys etc, this is mainly due to alarm systems installed poorly (by some of us as well as the diyer) Therefore we have to try to make sure that installations are installed to the correct standards with 24hr backup so that burglar alarms are taken seriosly again(how many times have you walked past a ringing alarm and done nothing?) The same as if I rewired my house I would get an qualified electrician to check it (and I would expect to pay him) for fear I had made a mistake. (your industry is lucky this is soon to become law) you should do the same with your alarm, for fear that goes off in the middle of the night and you cant stop it. Pete
Paul Giles Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 well put pete. Paul PG Security Systems Somerset SSAIB Certificate of Merit Installers. www.pgsecurity.co.uk
Guest Guest_malcolm Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 peter If my alarm was to go off in the early hours i would know exactly how to stop it and it would be far sooner than waiting for an alarm engineer. As i have said the system has been totaly rewired and redesigned by me. It would appear to me on reading some of the posts that this site is just a way of drumming up buisness for alarm engineers of which there are good and bad as in every trade.I just wish ide not bothered asking but be assured i will get this information and i will not be paying for it.I would like to thank you for your help (NOT) and will not be on this site again. malcolm
