Gardtec 800

Hello everyone

I have a Gardtec series 800 installed in my home many years ago.

The original installer has closed his business and moved abroad.

I now need to access the engineer functions to reprogram the part set zones. The manufacturer is currently refusing me access to the manuals and the ability to reset the engineer code. (if I knew the code all would be well)

I stongly believe that as the owner of this unit I have the right to do with it as I see fit

I just wanted to know if I am alone in believing this

What does everyone else think?

However if I am to be denied use of my own equipment then I will be forced to replace the panel. Can anyone suggest a replacement (from another more open manufacturer) with similar user functionality that can be installed without replacing all the sensors and wiring.

Many thanks

David

The code is in place for a very good reason[no time to get into reasons ect], and not to stop you using your system.

Even if you had the manual the company could and should IMO have locked the codes [we do], so the manual would be no use.

My advice would be to call a local approved [sSAIB/NSI]company who are able to unlock/reset a gardtec 800, as its a very good system and would cost you alot more then a callout for the parts alone.

This does not help I know but it might help you to understand where we are coming from,

Engineer Codes - Who can have them

With a professionally installed system,

British Standard PD6662 (effective from 1st October 2005) dictates that only engineers can access engineering

Permitting a user to access engineering breaks regulations

I can't find it but I'm very sure the old BS4737 that was superseded by PD6662 had the same 'rule'

magpye

Someone told me I was ignorant and apathetic, I don't know what that means, nor do I care.

Hi David,

you could simply buy a replacement main pcb, i know it urks but we are in the security industry, and trying very often to defend people from themselves.

if it was made to easily to access what defence would be offered against crooks? could be like having a cash safe with simple lock on the back door so it takes someone with the knowledge o overcome it, unfortnatelythats rarely mr J Public.

I agree with you entirely, it is your control panel and you should be able to do what you like with it and to be fair you can or at least you could if you knew the code.

Texecom have a pretty open policy towards providing support to DIYers but as already mentioned the 800 is a pretty good panel so as I see it you have two choices.

1 Pay an engineer to unlock it for you and give you the codes. (some will some wont, personally I would subject to certain conditions).

2 Buy a new panel so you are in total control of the codes etc.

Hello everyone

Thanks for your comments. Interesting to hear what others think.

Couple of points, If I can buy a new circuit board then why not let me unlock the one I already have? its quicker, cheaper and easier for everyone.

I do understand the security implications, however where do I find a list of houses to break into that happen to have the same panel and where I would have time to unlock it before the sirens drive me mad! or indeed the police turn up.

I need to think about the next step but its likely to be a new panel, that way I am in charge. Also I need to do the changes quickly and do not want the panel out of operation for any period of time for it to be sent away.

Many thanks to all who responded.

If you had engineering access, you could change some functions of the alarm without realising what you had done ...... then when you get burgled and the alarm doesn't function correctly the alarm company gets the blame.

By restricting access this cannot happen. No responsible alarm company or engineer would give you engineering access.

If you supply & fit your own panel or circuit board then no installer is involved .... so it's not our problem what you do. Only you will carry the can.

Comprende?

Thta's a fair way of putting it!! If you want to access the part sets and don't have the engineer code then why not defualt the panel (In the hope the engineer code is not locked in) and re-program it, if you think you can do the part set programing then the above should be easy...
