Alarm Protection Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Get a company in to install an up to date alarm system and take out a maintenance contract. Its unfortunate that the council broke in but i have seen this a few times. !
Louise Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 Well Ive considered all your replies and thank you for the advice. I agree with Chorlton that I doubt I can claim this on my buildings insurance. It was my Dad's idea! I poo-pooed it but he still insisted I call to ask. Ive recently claimed on the buildings insurance for water damage from the upstairs flat and there is nothing in the paperwork that would relate to the problem im experiencing with my alarm, so Im definately not going down that avenue. Thats just awful re your wife's accident and them invoicing you so quickly. I bet you were livid! I do hope I may have gotten away with them invoicing me. As for the make/model/components you've questionned, I would have thought Optima 2 Plus was the right information???? Hpotter - I will get my boyfriend to check for disconnected wires on the box outside. Thank you. Also, my alarm only stops sounding when you put the code in the panel. Its always been like that. Nothing to do with re-arming???? I dont think (as Antinode suggested) I will be putting in a new bell box outside my property. Im thinking along the lines of just getting a completely new alarm system fitted. Im sure my mum had one put in recently for not alot of money at all. The one I have now was installed by the previous owner of my flat. Its old, very old!! And of course I would do it along the correct procedures i.e. having key holders etc. Im thinking it'll be cheaper just to install a new system than having an engineer round to see what's wrong with mine now/correcting it all/putting in new bell box with a cut out timer etc etc etc.
Chorlton Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Hi louise I was meaning what bellbox and PIR's your system had too but no matter I think your making the right choice to get all new. Feel free to post any question regarding any quotes you get from different installers. My advice would be to use an installer registered withe either the NSI or SSAIB inspectorates, get a minimum of 3 quotes, ask lots of questions, find out about servicing contracts and if they include or exclude callout charges etc and don't pick just on price! C.
hpotter Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Well if it continously sounds clearly you will need a new panel, or as you say cut off timer- these can be built into modern sounder units. TBO, I think If you compared a 20yr old computer with what you use on line today i'm sure in terms of - real cost, functions, reliabilty, flexabilty and even just pure esthetics- you'll agree its time to update. In choosing your installer I would suggest you start by asking all your friends/relatives/neighbours etc. who have alarms, new or old - what customer service do they receive?
