SheerBedlam Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Hi, Iinstalled a Scantronic 9000 control panel about 17 years ago. I now have a problem in that a component has blown on the main PCB due to a further fault, which has been rectified. My problem is, that I am unable to make out what the component was. It is labled as D18, but the small piece that is left looks more like a resistor than a diode. Anyone able to help please?

Never heard of a 9000 I'm afraid, any chance of a picture, might then be able to help. Someone told me I was ignorant and apathetic, I don't know what that means, nor do I care.
Alarm Protection Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Tbh for 17 years you have had a good system and may now consider an upgrade. !
SheerBedlam Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 Thanks for the suggestion of an upgrade, but I would really like to breath life back into the old friend. The 9000 is the same panel as the 9100 but without the onboard keypad and internal sounder.
justin Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Thanks for the suggestion of an upgrade, but I would really like to breath life back into the old friend. The 9000 is the same panel as the 9100 but without the onboard keypad and internal sounder. The Scantronic 9000 was a good panel but repairing it with this kind of fault could be tricky. If you manage to replace the exact components it's still possible further damage has been caused. Scantronic won't do it. Most keypads for these used to ware out long before the panels broke. If you don't want to replace it with something modern, i suspect your only option would be to stalk around Ebay.
antinode Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 99% of engineers won't repair to component level, so it's unlikely you will get any help in that respect. The 9100/9000 whilst a solid panel is long discontinued. There is a 9100 on eBay at present, probably your best bet if you want a quick repair although you can only keep patching things up for so long as spares are drying up. Out of iterest, what's the exact fault? Trade Member

It will almost certainly be a general purpose silicon diode like a 1N4001, if it was mine and I was determined to repair it I would risk replacing this part though I would only do it with extreme reluctance for a paying customer. One problem you may have is polarity, diodes are polarity concious and if the one you have is badly damaged it may be difficult to tell which way around it goes. Look at other diodes on the board, there may be identification marks indicating polarity. Good luck!

I can only find up to D16 or R18 Can you point to where the component is on the PCB Someone told me I was ignorant and apathetic, I don't know what that means, nor do I care.
Monty Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 we used to have a few old units lying around in work shop will have a look through the week and post you back. www.AllanMoncrieffAlarms.com
SheerBedlam Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 Thanks for all the help so far, the component D18 is at the top right of the pcb, between the speaker jack and fuse.
