CCTV at 'Your' house

If you were choosing CCTV for your house, what system components would you choose ?

(Spending your money, and aiming to achieve usable recorded video 24/7)

[A deliberately 'open' question].

Assume the usual views; car on the drive, side gate, rear gate ...

You want to install it.

And you're no expert !!

[You've tried a B&Q / Micromark solution and were disappointed.]

I have a couple of spare pc's so decided to go hunting on ebay for a basic dvr.

Got a 4 channel dvr card for £17 & a Day\Night Colour Camera for £25

I know you get what you pay for but I just need one just for starters and hopefully be able to sell it on at a profit :)

I have CCTV on my house, and I have to admit I did spend money (it will be great when I get the chance to finish it.....)

I have two cameras on the driveway, both day/night IR tube cameras, the IR is a bit naff but the image is good. I then have one on the side gate and one on the patio area.

These are recorded 24/7 on a 4 channel m/plex DVR and a colour 14" monitor.

I have a modulator and aerial amp in the draw, ready to feed the pictures to all the tvs in the house (4).

This may be a bit excessive, but when you consider that this is our job and we advocate these systems - shouldn't we practice what we preach?

For the novice, try Voltek kit, good pictures (for the cash) and links to most domestic Video recorders. (Movement activated recording). Go for the Spectrum range if you budget will reach.

I have a day/night bullet type camera on the front of the house looking at the front drive and path leading to the house, a mono silent witness vandal resistant dome looking at the front daynight camera (in case it gets nicked), and a silent witness mono dome up the rear drive. The rear garden is fairly secure but I have a led flood camera that I want to try out in complete darkness.

The system is connected to a pc (via pci card) this records motion only and is networked via wireless lan to anywhere in the house or garden.

Pete :)

I've connected 4 IR bullet cameras, 1 looking at the drive way, side entrance, back door and patio. I've run these cables into a small room in my house, i use a pc based pci card (use it for office work too) recording all these cameras and connected them remotely so i can see watch from my office. Also ive got a video distributor (4 in 8out) and ive run a CAT5 cable to my loft and put a 4ch DVR there, so if my PC gets nicked ive got a backup. I then run a coax cable from my loft to my front TV room so i can watch all camera in quad mode.

Cus I can is the first reason. Cus although I live in a private road I have to drive through Iraque to get there :o . Cus I work in security and see what some of these idiots get up to ;) . Cus I work hard for everything I have got and I dont want it nicked damaged or sat on by some druggie that thinks the world owes him a living <_< .

Cus of all the times I had my stereo nicked in the nineties and i new who did it but couldnt prove it.

I could go on but your bored I can tell

I`ve just got a sony day/night cam hooked up to a sony 24hr time lapse video.

It does the trick, and the local police force still have several of my video tapes, which will be returned pending a prosecution.

You`d be supprised just how many home owners have cctv installed.

I Disagree, yeah there are those who just wanna be nosey, but they buy the cheaper stuff.

Those who go to the expense of a descent CCTV system, usually have had bad experiences in the past with thefts and stuff.
